Hey guys first off let me say thank you for any and all responses. I just bought a 01 volvo 2.9 n/a from my brother for 600 bucks great car just needs a headgasket. (easy right )? Well i have the car pretty much torn down and im ready to take the cover off. And get to the head bolts. But im kind of confused about a few things.

1. Why do these cars require a rear cam lock tool ? Done a head gasket before and did not need it so im confused.

2.  Do i 100% need to remove the cam sprocket to replace the headgasket? Or is it only necessary if i want to replace the cam seal ?

Thank u again for ur responses i just dont want to move forward till im 100% sure in what and why im doing what im doing it.

P.s i live in colorado so if anyone has a rear cam lock tool for this car and is willing to rent it to me just message me.

You need the tool to properly time the engine after repairs due to the non vvt sprockets having slotted bolt holes to adjust timing and the cams with the vvt hubs actually can be rotated by hand without actually moving the cam itself. You need something to lock the cams. I've seen people make their own locks with pieces of metal. You are also going to need to replace the cam seal, can't reuse it, it will just leak if you can even get it on correctly. The lock will be necessary to torque down the vvt hub as the spec is 120nM.
