tuner4life
Hello all. I've owned several 1998 and older P80s, but never had any experience with a P2. We are kind of looking at P2 V70Rs. The manual cars seem to go for close to $10k, while the automatic ones are close to $5k. Are there any other major differences between the manuals/automatics that make them worth that much less? It would be a car for my wife, so she would be fine with an automatic assuming that they don't have longevity issues..What else do I need to look for and red flags? I know all the failure points and things to watch out for on the P80s, is it safe to assume that the P2Rs are basically the same as far as that goes? Am I correct that they don't have the driveshaft issues that the older ones have?Sorry for all the questions, I searched around and can't find the info and I'm having issues registering on the V70R page..Thanks. Timbo Slice
-AWD coupler tends to wear out, check that the AWD is working properly.-Auto trans cars are torque limited. Also, they tend to have more issues than the manuals in general.-Manual trans cars go for more because as an enthusiast heavy car, someone searching out a P2R will want it in manual 9/10-Check the condition of the suspension. If struts/shocks need to be replaced, they are $$.-Just check overall condition of the car. If it was cared for pretty well, you can be safe. But something at the $5-7k price range and you may get nickel and dimed on maintenance very quickly.Overall, maintenance on them is similar to the P80s. Take care of the car and the car will take care of you.
andyb5
There are a lot of changes by model year from 04-07. I don't claim to know them all, but here are a few big points.04/05 have 5 speed autos, 06/07 have 6 speed autos with a much stronger angle gear collar. The 5 speed GTs have the same issues with collar gears stripping as the M66 cars, but the 06-07 don't typically fail. To add to what Timo said, the 04-05 cars are torque limited (can be removed with a tuned ECU) but the 06/07 GTs aren't torque limited from the factory. There was a revision in the Haldex AWD system somewhere along the line, might have been in 06 but I'm not sure about that. 05+ got a significant cosmetic facelift as well, with color-matched body trim instead of grey plastic, a different center console, etc.
Timbo Slice
To piggyback off Andy (yeehaw), I'd stay away from the '04s. Generally any new model of vehicle will have it's hiccups in the first year. This statement is true for the P2R, but all of the major stuff was resolved by the time the '05 model came out. tuner4life
Yeah, definitely looking at 2005 and up, and she definitely wants an automatic. Good news is that it would remain basically stock.. What worries me most is the cost of repairs compared to the P80s
Timbo Slice
Repairs really aren't much more than P80, if at all. It's the shocks/struts that bit people in the ass. It's going to be hard to find an '05+ VR for under $10k. They're a lot of the time more desirable. It's the '04 SR's that are priced very cheaply 99% of the time.

Timbo Slice
'06 Autos are fine too. That's a rare deal, if you're looking to get into one, I'd see that guy right now.
Burn-E
Should consider this one - less mileage, nice configuration and close by as well:http://www.ebay.com/itm/2007-Volvo-V70R-Type-R-Automatic-Runs-Looks-and-Drives-Great-/252021315934?_trksid=p2054897.l4275
Flukey
I would ask myself "Does she really need an R" ??? Unless she really needs AWD? Me personally, I think AWD is not necessary for most climates and everyday needs.Fwd models perform very nicely and are much less worrysome and far cheaper to maintain. My wife has a AWD Subaru Impreza. At 18,000 miles she hit a pothole and itdestroyed a tire. I had to have Tirerack shave the new tire to match the tread depth of the others. It cost me $300 for basically a used tire. No more AWD for me.
