Yeah, that is what I am leaning towards as well.  I would love a do88 intercooler as I have heard good things.  The problem is the hit to my wallet is more than I want to deal with at the moment.  Maybe if I sell these Volans and tires I can reinvest...

You could go the water/meth injection route like me.  Sort of a lot to do to get it installed, but with most kits you won't have to even remove anything (except maybe an intercooler pipe). Good progressive kit new is around the 400$ range give or take.  I found a used kit on ebay for 300$...either way, cheaper than an intercooler,  I'd think the gains would be the same as an intercooler just installing it, but definitely better if you tune for it.  Only problem is it won't have any changes until you reach whatever starting psi you pick

I have talked to people about the water/meth injection and it sounds like more moving parts than I am interested in.  I don't want to overly complicate things.  I would rather just increase the intercooler size and capability.  I am almost 100% sure that the problem I am having is simply due to heat.  I wish the do88 intercooler was less expensive because I would order one today.

After this weekends exercise of redoing every vacuum connection and every hose clamp connection the car runs really, really well.  It is dead smooth at idle and and sits at about 22 in-HG vacuum at warm idle.  Once I get the sway bar installed I will be basically done with the mods.  That is until this winter when I will likely upgrade to Koni's, put in a bigger turbo and get a new tune.  But other than that, I am basically done.

The only moving "part" is the water/meth mixture, but I understand what you mean.  To me the most daunting part is trying to figure out the easiest way to run wires/hoses from my trunk to under the hood.

i agree, heat is almost definitely the problem, I suffer from it too, and would've already ordered the do88 intercooler if it was a tad but cheaper.

also, if I had a dollar for every time I said "after this mod I'm done" I wouldn't worry about the price of the intercooler ;)

No kidding.  I was actually done a long time ago right after I rebuilt the turbo.  Then, once I started to really like how the car performed, I couldn't stop.  So silicone hoses, tune, wheels, more wheels, LED interior lights, cargo cover, etc etc etc.

I started with. "Ok, just an intake and an exhaust, that'll be it" and here we are turbo swapped, I'm on my second tune, and I'm gonna be getting a third once I get the injection set up.

speaking of tunes, idk if yours is or not, but if not I've got an ipd stage 1 ecu I could sell.  The computers from my 98 s70 t5m

I currently have an ARD Green Tune set at 17 psi.  Aside from in-town gas mileage being not great (perhaps more of a right foot problem than anything else) it is pretty good.  My highway only mileage comes in at about 27 mpg, but my city only mileage is usually in the mid 15's.  When I had the stock ECU in it I was still fixing things, so I don't know what the mpg was with it (needed two O2 sensors, turbo, coolant leaks, thermostat, etc).  Once I was at Stage 0, I swapped in the ARD tune.

How do you like the IPD tune?

I just dropped in the stock ecu and went for a spin. Car woke right up. More power than the ARD tune, turbo spooled quicker, felt faster. Going to give it a try for the whole day tomorrow and see what I think. Maybe it is the tune after all. The stock boosts right to 12 psi and holds. Feels better over all.

How much do you want for the IPD tune?

Just drove in to work with the stock ECU and the difference from the ARD tune is dramatic. Of course it is not as hot today as it has been. My drive is a mix of city and highway and the stock tune feels better in every way.  So now to figure out what to do... perhaps contact ARD and see what they can do, but I bought the tune second hand, so I am not sure they can do much.  The IPD tune sounds nice, but I would rather spend less than $350 (though that is probably a fair price) or go the more custom route like you have done.  I guess I will run the stock ECU for a bit until I can make up my mind.

I've personally never had a problem with ard, but I have had some horror stories regarding their tunes.

Custom tuning will always be better than an off the shelf tune, but isn't really necessary until you get a good bit of mods done.

You could always read the "tuners rejoice" thread and tune it yourself.  I'm waaay too intimidated to even try it personally.  The author of that post (tightmopedman9) is who I've had doing ny tuning, and all my feedback is positive.

I have no skill, patience, desire, ability, etc to do my own tune.  Way way over my head.

I reached out to ARD and I am waiting to hear back to see what, if anything, they have to say.  After that I will make some kind of decision.

The custom tuning route sounds like a good one, but when I read through the info at Beust it seems like more than I am qualified for.  I don't even own a laptop.

I'm with you on the self tuning thing completely.

let us know what ard says, as I'm curious.  I've never dealt with them in the tuning aspect, but when it comes to actual parts, I've been impressed.

im sure a completely stock set up would benefit from a custom tune, but it seems people with little to no mods go with an off the shelf tune, whereas those who are more modified and have more invested in their cars go the custom route to get the most for the money

Yeah I agree with the benefits of a custom tune, but I am probably sticking with the 16T or perhaps upgrading to the 19T at some point, but not in the very near future.  My current setup is a 2.4L 2000 R motor, Snabb Intake, IPD exhaust, R manifold and silicone hoses.  The car is on H&R springs and as soon as the new transverse arm mounting bolts show up it will have an IPD rear sway bar.  I just took off the Volans and put the Meteors on this weekend.

What is the 19T like as compared to the 16T?  Must be fun.
