radio replacement in '02 causes battery drain?

so ma's '02 volvo some jackweed put a different radio in a little while ago. the guy is a bit of a jackweed i know him & i know he is pretty careless & doesn't know volvos that well.  the radio he replaced the original with could be from any model or god knows what.

now her battery keeps draining out. (dunno her model but shouldn't matter too much)

her mech--a new one; knows volvos been working on them for 25 yrs-- tried a few things: alternator he tested--not the cause;  and a few other things. now he's saying its the battery.  but he doesn't know about the radio replacement.

now i know he's at least decent mechanic i know him & his shop.  and i know that electrical probs can be hard to pinpoint often.

so has anyone ever heard of anything like this?  i have a '93 850 and i've never had or even heard about this happening.  i've been on these forums for some years now.  (i searched thoroughly & didn't find anything like this)

thanks for your time & help.  ma is 73 and breaking down herself so i'd love to be able to help her.  she wants a new/used car but can't really afford it...

i can't even begin to imagine what might be causing the battery drain--its pretty obvious & substantial...keeps happening until no crank or even no crank upon entering vehicle.  i'm no electrical wizard so i'm asking.

thanks a lot we appreciate it! volvo we roll

was it wired correctly? could be staying on even with key on causing a drain. the shop should be able to perform a parasitic drain test and determine where its coming from. might not even be radio.

i don't know if it was wired right. there's a decent chance it wasn't.  but thanks Fran9690 i will tell her to have a parasitic drain test done.

thanks very much & all the best to you & yours!  this helps a lot.  now i know this test too if i ever need it. PDT.  parasitic drain test...sweet...
