Justin R32
This started yesterday. 2 days ago I got rain squeal and have a visible line around prop shaft where it contacted the resonator. Now this happens somewhat randomly but very frequently. Sound like a woodpecker or jack hammer on the distance. Goes with road speed and not engine rpm. Justin R32
I may have figured it out. Handbrake!!applied handbrake and it went away. Drove around with handbrake slightly on for a few seconds a few times. No more sound.
kiowathomas
So did you find out the actual reason?
Justin R32
I spent most of the day under the car trying to figure it out. Thought it was angle gear or transmission since it went with road speed and not engine speed. After aplying e brake the sound went away and hasn't returned. Rear drum internals, maybe e brake spring or shoe was loose in the rotor. Not really worth it to dig into rear rotors unless the sound returns. E brake works just fine. Commander Riker
Seriously doubt it's the ebrake. My internet diagnosis would be carrier bearing on the AWD shaft.
kampman
Sounds exactly like the noise the propshaft in my R made when it was going bad.
Justin R32
Well... The sound hasn't come back since I fiddled with the ebrake. If it returns I'll update this post with my findings.
EricF
Ebrake disables the rear drive wheels... So you have just switched off AWD.
Justin R32
Ebrake disables the rear drive wheels... So you have just switched off AWD.Damn...I didn't know that. That makes sense that the noise goes away. Thanks!Yea....the noise is back. Same as my videos from up above. Definitely goes with road speed and seems to go away with throttle or braking (I'm assuming this is due to added resistance +/- on the drive shaft. I do not 'feel' the noise in the car and it's actually hard to hear with windows up. Windows down going about 25mph through a school zone or something it's pretty loud. Can I replace the carrier bearing without the whole drive shaft??
Timbo Slice
Nope, you have to replace the entire driveshaft. I'd suggest Colorado Driveshaft. When I thought I was having DS issues on my R they quoted me $400 with core charge for a refurbished unit. Can't really beat that price IMO and it's cake to disassemble and reinstall. WayAway
ITS YOUR Front CV joint on your driveshaft. My 98 R did the same thing
