milanomike
OK, been reading about the ETM (or drive by wire), found a 2000 S70 with low miles, photo suggests ETM is new. How much trouble are these things, skip it altogether or worth considering? I know everything is drive by wire today. My turbo Golf drive by wire has been bulletproof for going on 15 years. I know 01 and 02 have tranny issues, but have noticed 03 and 04 are cheap, at least in base model. Talking daughter driver here.Thanks.
RussB
I don't have much of an answer for you, but I bought a 2000 S70 and knew the ETM was bad. I bought the Xemodex unit which has a lifetime warranty for $
kampman
At this point in time I'd say the ETM is a non-issue. They caused a lot of headaches when these cars were newer, but 15 years down the line the issues are well documented, it's easy to find a good used one, and like RussB said you can also get the Xemodex rebuild that has upgraded sensors that don't wear out. If the ETM that's in the car is good now it shouldn't be a problem in the remaining lifetime of the car, but if it does fail it's easy enough to replace. If the car you're considering is a non-turbo model I'd be more concerned about the transmission, since the 2000 non-turbo models used the AW55 5-speed auto, but that's not really a dealbreaker either.
