JA VOLVO
2 questions:1. Are the axle shafts the same for auto and manual transmissions (specifically passenger side)?2. What are reliable brands that are not from Volvo for ridiculous prices?
Fran9690
Auto and manual are different part numbers, but when I first my R, previous owner did the manual swap and kept the auto axles in it. I have since replaced the axles due to one having a torn CV boot and the driver's side would keep popping out from the trans and cause a leak past the seal. JA VOLVO
ok, thanks. I ended up ordering an axle shaft from Advance auto. It says it is a new shaft and is branded Carquest. They were the only ones I could easily find that were marked specifically for a manual. I will post up my thoughts after i get it and install it.It was $99 with free shipping. And I also had a code for 10% off, so $89 instead.
andyb5
Automatic and manual axles are different. They are interchangeable however, because they are the same size where the axle enters the transmission and wheel bearing. The manual axle has a larger diameter intermediate shaft and is theoretically stronger than the automatic version. I have never seen an aftermarket axle replicate the construction of the OEM manual axle, only the automatic axles.
NEU
There is also another issue with finding the correct parts since you are a AW55 auto (5psd) I know the driversside is a special axle, I have the same part on my '00R with the AW55. Passenger I'm not 100% sure since I have AWD. Just something to keep in mind when ordering parts for '00+ automatic cars.
JA VOLVO
It is on a C70, not AWD... though that would be awesome if it was.
JA VOLVO
Update. The axle is in and I had no trouble with fitment. The build quality looks good to me. The boots appear to be good quality. Time will tell of course, but as of now, I am happy with it. I still have a vibration issue, but I am starting a new thread on that one. Here is the link to the axle I got if anyone is interested: Axle Shaft from Advance Auto
