2002 S60 5 Speed Automatic Question

Hi,

Found a 02 S60 that looks pretty good, but can't recall (or find in the new site here) whether the 5 speed auto tranny issues were resolved by 2002.

there also used to be a list of how to fix things on the old site for the models up to 1998, can't seem to find that anymore.

Thanks.

Mike

They got slightly better.  But are still problematic,  it'll go eventually, even if you update software, flush religiously, do the B4 servo update.  Most of the issues were in the neutral-stop feature and if there was ever hard engagement during the early part of its life, chances are the damage has been done.

I just replaced the trans in my 01' 5spd geartronic at 180K.  Not a cheap fix by any means.

04' and newer were generally better.  Valve body was redesigned to alleviate the issues.  There are some that have had success however with simply replacing the control system shift solenoids and flushing the system.

If a donor transmission is found from a 2004 or later model, are they a direct swap for the 2001's? I was going to do all of those common bandaids like the servo cover update, full flush and software update but if it's going to be inevitable I'd rather replace it. My friend recently donated to me his 2001 s60 non-turbo and it has those common automatic transmissions issues: hard shifts and gear engagement, trans flares while stopped etc. This is my first Volvo and I'm not certain that I can tackle the solenoids in the transmission and assume that replacing the whole thing to be an easier job.

There are some differences between the geartronic and standard auto that don't make them interchangeable.  My understanding is that the 01' geartronic is different than the others and will only accept a very particular model.  Mine took about a month to get in from LKQ.  The 01' GT is apparently a unicorn among the GT trans lineup.

Thanks for the info, mine is the standard automatic transmission. I looked around at pricing for used replacement transmissions, now I'm considering buying an inexpensive one off eBay or something and then having a go at the solenoids while the transmission is out of the car.
