C70 T5M Build

I had a 99 C70 red vert for a few years, but finally found my dream C70 about 2 years ago.

How the vert sat:

It needed a lot of work but I found a 1998 C70 black coupe with a FACTORY manual.  The guy was shady, no ABS, gauges didn't work, top motor mount was held in with sticks, and radiator end tanks leaked, but after a short drive I knew it could be amazing.  Bought it and drove it 30 minutes home and enjoyed the entire ride.  After basic maintenance the mods began.

How it sat after XC grille, ABM corners and IPD springs

How it sat during Eurojam 2015 in Orlando, with a bunch more mods: XC front bumper, 2.5" intercooler piping, 960 throttle body, FMIC, 3" obx downpipe, TME cat-back, OMP strut bar, 2.75" SNAAB intake, bmw 540i MAF, poly mounts all around, r-manifold, and a k24 with 11 billet compressor wheel and 3 degree clip of the exhaust wheel.  I was and still am working on tuning it myself.  It's tuned to not build more than 8psi before 3k rpms.

Then I did the GT500 hood fent, enkei wheels, roof spoiler, 320mm BBK calipers from a mazdaspeed3,cxracing coilovers,  IPD sway bars and custom sideskirt and fender flares from an xc70 and bmw 330i.  And drove it up to tail of the dragon, moonshiner 28 and cherhola skyway with a bunch of C30s.

Jeremy,

Man, does that looks sharp! Alot better since the last time I saw it. Did you get it repainted?

How's it running with the tune?

Rod

Hey Rod.  Nope, just got it detailed and pulled a new hood from the local junkyard when I did the gt500 hood vent.

It's running good overall with the tune, I finally got the majority of my knock resolved, but still sometimes get a few events when pushing it.  I'm sure it would be quicker if I could run more than 4 degrees of timing at WOT.

Don't do this, set the TCV duty to 100% at low RPMs until target boost, then taper to a TCV duty which will maintain your target boost. As long as your timing is appropriately low enough you won't have any problems. The 'whiteblocks can't handle boost at low RPMs' thing is a fallacy due to crap tunes from back in the day. As long as you don't have any knock at low RPMs you can bring the boost in as fast as the turbo will allow.

The car looks good, but I really think you could use some 15-20mm spacers in the rear. Might not be the best for handling, but will certainly make the car look better.

Thanks for the advice.  I'm still running stock internals, so I was worried about bending/breaking something.  I had initially hooked up my TCV backwards by accident, so I know the K24 can boost really quickly.

20mm spacers are planned for the rear, and probably a set of 10mm for the front.

  • 1 month later...

I ended up buying an 06 s60r M66 a few weeks back and have been debating what to do with the C70.  I just can't get it out of my head, and the passion just isn't there for the s60.

So, I've made the decision to go completely in and truly build the c70.  I'm going to start doing some weight reduction (seats, sound deadening, etc), and slowly build an 02 B5244T3 that I bought in 2013 for the vert (H-beams, overall refresh refresh, send stock pistons out for coating, shim the block), SMF, LSD, and a larger turbo (maybe GT3076).  Get as close to 400whp as I can, it isn't a daily anymore so I'm not in a rush to build it, and don't have a set budget (which could be scary)...
