Limited time to pass inspection, please help.

Another flashing arrow post... only because every other post I found on the internet never had an ending!!

Recently purchased a 1999 C70. Got an awesome deal (says me) because multiple lights were on, looked up most common issues and decided I could fix it easily enough that it was worth my time.

Seller (small dealer, did not know much about car) replaced the Speed Sensor. This did not solve the issue with the speed sensor. ABS and multiple other lights were also on... speedo hardly worked... gas gauge was wrong.... (which caused me to run out of gas btw, not cool) So I ordered a rebuilt ABS module thru an exchange company in Cali.

This fixed 90% of the issues. However, like I saw on most older posts, the P0722 and P1618 codes STILL EXIST. So I am stuck with the flashing arrow once I start driving, hard shifting, no converter lock-up and a Check Engine light that won't clear.

No one ever said what had to happen to finish this issue, AFTER replacing both an ABS box AND the Speed Sensor. I can see the speed sensor, it is clearly new.

When I owned an 850 I ended up with a stuck engine light because the TCU went bad. I grabbed another TCU from a yard yesterday. Had to order that stupid f*cking tool!!!!! So I can't try it yet.

let me know your thoughts, similar experiences... your help is much appreciated, I have about 2 weeks before I have to stop driving,  I bought the car out of state so it is not inspected.

You can't swap a TCM like in this like you could a C70. 99+ went to CAN network system. The module is coded to the car it's installed in. If you try to install it into your car, it won't work. It's married to the VIN that it came out of.

Black betty-

The sensor replaced is the one in that pic in the link you sent me, which is what I had referenced to see the correct one was replaced.

I found it odd that the car in the pic had plug wires still, as my 99 does not.... but didn't question that part.

That is indeed the transmission speed sensor, correct? If not, then I guess my problem is obvious.

Fran- You confirmed my fear. So if the TCU is bad... what do I do? Do I have to pay a dealer just to have that confirmed, then give them the other one to hope it is good and can be reflashed? That sounds like too much money for a car that only has 123k... but it is what it is.

This is my 2nd out of 2 fwd Vo's with transmission electronics issues. Good thing the C30 my dad just bought is a stick shift!

I don't believe you can reload a used TCM from one vehicle into another. Can't confirm though, it has never come up at my shop. Some modules we can reload that are used, like an ETM, DEM, etc. But a module like the TCM and ECM are major ones with the VIN coded to it, not sure if it can be done.

I see. Well being as it's never come up, maybe these ones don't get toasted like the old ones used to, and it jus needs to be reprogrammed for the new sensor? Does that ever come up?

I verified earlier today that the speed sensor changed just before I bought the car was the correct location- compared it to my friend's same year but stick shift and he doesn't have that sensor.

Being as I did not change the sensor myself, and the guy seemed to know very little about Volvos, is it possible the new sensor is garbage? I know he got it off Ebay to save money, so is it easy enough to buy one for the wrong car and still have it fit? This seems very likely, as he had no idea the ABS box was causing most of the issues (if not all of them, had he not changed the speed sensor....)

Update-

Ordered the Volvo sensor for $110... don't know what else to do, but I'll update again later this week if it solves my issue.

The speed sensor currently installed is probably for a different vehicle, being as the wires on it do not match the colors of the Volvo one I ordered. Guy said he ordered the sensor on Ebay. I went on Ebay and couldn't even find a tranny speed sensor for a 99 C70.

Can someone please verify that P0722 is for the trans speed sensor? Not the engine speed sensor? FCP's listing says the engine speed sensor assists in trans functions as well, such as TC lock-up. That is currently a feature I lack.

P0700 DTC's are generally transmission related. I cannot confirm if that is for the trans speed sensor or not, the DTC's we get with VIDA are different than P codes, it would show up as TCM-214 or the like for example. If it was the engine speed sensor, it would be ECM-5000. There is a chart to cross reference, but I just have to find it. I will look at work tomorrow and see what I find, unless someone else can answer between now and then.

Awesome, thanks man.

Based on my previous 850 TCM issues it was always 0700 codes as well so I'd believe that.

I greatly appreciate the help. All I can offer you in return is 240 parts, but I doubt you need those if you're on this forum :P

UPDATE-

Installed Genuine-Volvo Trans Speed Sensor. It worked!  The sensor the guy installed was incorrect. It looked more like a CPS from a B230F just with the C70 wire harness on it. No idea what it was meant for, but I'm going to look up the part # on it out of curiosity.

So by 'worked' I mean no more flashing arrow, car shifts as it should and SMOOTH.... TC lock-up also functions correctly. My fuel economy improved by 7mpg on a highway test trip today.

Unfortunately even after a 100 mile trip the codes have not cleared. My friend's scanner is apparently not good enough to clear them, all it has done is make it so the car won't start on the 1st try after being 'cleared'.

What scanner do I need to purchase? With the amount of Volvos I deal with the cost is no issue. I want the proper tool for these things. I used to buy only rwd models so I never needed a good scanner around.

Light still hasn't gone out, so still can't pass inspection....

Taking a 500 mile trip this weekend. If it STILL doesn't go out then this car's computer system is assanine and I guess I'll be buying the VIDA device?

Real great system they upgraded to here... car can't tell when it's fixed....

You might need a scan tool to clear the codes then. I have never had an issue having them clear when I remove the computers, that's strange. Might be that the codes are a hard fault and immediately come back when the key is cycled on. No way to tell without a scanner to clear though.
