2002 s60 T5 5spd flywheel/clutch conversion to single mass

hello sirs!

can the stock dual mass flywheel and clutch setup from 2002 s60 T5 be converted to SINGLE mass and an 850R clutch setup??

when Bmac and i did a manual swap on my T-5R, the tranny i used was from a 2000 s70 NA.  i sourced a single mass flywheel and bought a new R clutch from Tasca and it's been rock solid for over 3 years now..

i plan on putting some power through this s60 T5 and wanted the lighter single mass setup and the reliability/driveability/grabability of the R clutch..  can this be done since this is an M56 car with no issue like we did on my T-5R (even though that was M56h)?

i remember reading somewhere about the spines on the single mass being either 19 or 23? which would i need for this s60 M56 tranny and would the R clutch bolt up either way?

thank you guys so much!

the later trans has more splines, and I think around 2002 was the break point. I had a 2001 S60 T5, and every place kept sending me the later style clutch disc, and I had to send it back twice. Because the 850R clutch disc is designed for the earlier style input shaft, you either have to confirm that your input matches, or you have to get a disc made with the proper center seciton, with the correct number of splines. It's been 3 years, but I think the earlier trans had 19 splines and was 7/8", while the later trans has 23 splines with a 1" shaft.

hey sir, thank you for your response!

so i would't know what flywheel to use until i got in there to count splines/measure the shaft?  2002 was the change over from 19 to 23 splines?

*could there be a chance i got an early 2002 with 19 splines and there'd be no issue on using 850 single mass and R clutch though, or NO chance on 2002?

thank you for your feedback.. beyond what i'd originally stated, this car is eating crank sensors...  im sure ya'll are scratching your heads like "whaaat?"

the original owner had some starting issues and brought the car to have codes read and one was a faulty crank sensor..  so he replaced the sensor and bracket (with volvo blue box) and the car worked fine for around 2 weeks and then the problem began again.  this is when he said, "forget it, i dont need this car/trouble" as he has 2 other cars. he actually didnt think it was the sensor at all since he'd replaced it and just figured it was ANOTHER electrical issue with the car (imagine that on a P2 lol).  now this came into my possession and he didnt know what was wrong with it..  i looked at the crank sensor he installed and it's seemingly hitting the flywheel (what else?).  the sensor is gouged and shaved off at the tip.  i looked in the trunk and found the old sensor in the new sensor's box and it was the same thing - chewed up and shaved off??

anybody ever have this happen?  why would the flywheel ever touch the crank sensor? we cross reference the bracket AND sensor and the part #'s are correct.  also, looking at the engine/trans, it doesn't look like it's ever been apart?  a flywheel aint easy to bend..  maybe starter damaged some teeth?

Flywheel doesn't touch the input shaft of the trans, so that won't be the problem. The difficulty will be getting the splined center section of the clutch disc to match the input shaft. The flywheel and clutch pressure plate need to match (and you already have that figured out), but you are concerned only about the clutch disc to match your trans.

As for the crank sensor, we've seen problems on the forums with the sensor being too far away, because of dirt in the mount. If it is too close to the flywheel, then I'd suspect that someone may have used the sensor mount from a different year car, or even the wrong sensor.

The bracket for the sensor for the 2002 is part number 30637803 (formerly 30637089), while for P2's up through 2001 it is 1275789.

Sensor itself is part number 31331765 (formerly 30713485) for 2002- and for -2001 it is 1275599. If someone bought the wrong sensor, then that could be your problem. Or, it may be that Volvo simply gave the same parts a new part number, and didn't change the part, that happens.

I would check the part number of what was installed on the car, and see if you have the right one. If you don't, then buy the correct one, and then compare it to the one you have removed. Chances are, it seats slightly further away from the flywheel. And it only has to be a few thousandths of an inch to make the difference.
