MrJamos
Hello everyone hoping someone can give me a little advice, while working on the brakes I realised the bushes on the left control arm are completely shotI have the 4 bolt type next year I'll be doing a massive overhaul on the suspension so for now I'll just replace the bushes on the arm.... Now the tricky part is what's the best way of removing the arm? Do I remove engine mounts if so do I need to remove all of the ones VIDA suggests which is front, back, right and rear along with the torque rod?Or is it possible to do the job by lowering the subframe enough to remove the bolts? Any help is appreciated.
thedrill
Unless your adamant in replacing the bolts. leave them where they are and just remove the arm and replace the bushings.
MrJamos
Well the problem I'm up against is the auto box is right in the way of getting to the bolts.
thedrill
Use the box end of a wrench and undo them, the bolts don't have to pull out of the subframe if you undo them evenly.. the control arm will move outwards.I normally remove the whole hub assembly off the strut when I'm doing this, as it just makes it easier to thread the bolts back into the control arm. troyhyde
Did my '99 XC70 arms a while back. I jacked up the engine slightly to make good clearance. Remove front lower engine mount bolts to block, upper torque mount, and lower trans. torque mount. Don't think I touched the hydraulics. Jack up engine gently with a wood block under the pan, remove arms/bolts, replace and re-seat the engine/trans assembly. It wasn't horrible.Hardest part of the job was finding correct torque values for the arms....... (I've forgotten them now but I don't think I figured them out before torquing the living sh*t out of them.) Probably not a brilliant idea in retrospect. Arms come with new bolts, at least if you go blue box - Volvopartswebstore is where I got parts if I recall correctly, they were the cheapest OEM.Your steering feel will be mucho-crisper once accomplished. Flukey
When your done. Make sure to tighten the bushing bolts with the suspension loaded. If ya don't do that the new bushings won't last long.
