Ihatespeedbumps
Hard to say without actually taking the transmission apart. Given your issues I wish I would have told you to get that plug kit so we could adjust these. I'm curious if we could curb the 2-3 behavior. Aside from pulling it apart and adjusting it I'm out of idea. Really sorry this didn't work as planned :(
boxpin
I took it out last night and drove around in adaptive mode for over an hour trying to get it to calm down. It never happened. I also emailed cascade about the problem and got a response back today. They said that transmissions that are not fixed by these linear solenoids are 99% caused by worn valve bodies. I wonder if it could be adjusted out, its pretty bad so I am not sure. I am going to hunt for a new valve body.
Ihatespeedbumps
Keep in mind you can only use valve bodies from 01-02. You might check the local salvage yards, I found an 02 XC70 a few months ago at pull a part that had an OEM replacement transmission in it. Had it been FWD I would have grabbed it. boxpin
Can I use the body from an 01-02 AWD or FWD?
Ihatespeedbumps
Yep, AWD does not matter, just 01-02.
boxpin
Been doing a little searching and it looks like 01-02 should not have a casting mark?? Mine has the vent hole and is a 'B' which would indicate as a later model. I was going to try to find another of the same.
NEU
Don't know if this information will help you hunt down the 2-3 flare shift. But this is what Sonnax trouble shooting guide says to look at http://www.sonnax.com/parts?utf8=%E2%9C%93&units%5B%5D=55-51SN&order=&symptoms%5B%5D=2-3+Flare&commit=Filter And have you changed the B4 servo cover? yours would be old enough that it might not have and that does 2-3 flare shifts. Thanks. I had read that. The first thing I did was replace the B4 servo cover. I have a rebuilt body coming without the linear servos(since I have them already) which saved me some $. Ihatespeedbumps
Where is the rebuilt VB coming from?
boxpin
Ebay. I called and talked to them about it. We are going to try one more test first before doing this. They said to test the shift solenoids, which I will try. If that does not reveal something they said then go after the body.

boxpin
the valve body fell through so now i am on the hunt. Question: The S40 also has a AW55-50SN transmission. I found one at the wrecker. Does anyone know if it is compatible? Seems to me it would be provided it has the same casting stamps.
NEU
I recall someone telling me that they had a slightly different AW55 that might not be compatible with your year.
boxpin
Well I installed the new valve body today. I found physical plungers that would not move on the old body. I was looking forward to having this thing licked. I installed the new body with the new solenoids and reset the adaptions. Sad to report...absolutely no change at all...zero. Still has the problem. I am no beginning to think its not the body and am going to turn my attention to the B4 servo. Found some recommendations on testing the distance of the piston.
