Possible Axle Vibration

In April my 2000 XC70 axle exploded, 500 mile trip fully loaded and it made it to the hotel parking lot where a piece of the inner CV fell on the ground.

Replaced at Darcars of Rockville Maryland (Nice Volvo dealer) with a World pac axle that was readily available. Bill came to $460, better then the $1000 it was going to cost for an OEM piece.

Fast forward to October of this year and I'm getting a vibration I've never felt coming from that same front passenger corner.

When turning hard (either fast or slow) to the left, I get a sort of lumping vibration from the wheel. It was worse with my summer tires and is still present with the winter set on there. It feel like it does it every couple of degrees and I'm not sure what could be causing it. When sitting in the passenger seat I can feel it through my feet on the floor.

With the car half in the air I tried my best to man handle the axle by twisting the two pieces opposite each other and pulling it in and out, it seemed rather solid.

The Mounts for the front sway bar are worn and I can see cracks in them, the bushings of the A arms are just fine, there's now highway vibrations synonymous with bad tie rods, wheel balance, and ball joints.

I've started to wonder if maybe the axle bolt at the end of the whole thing is a little loose and it making contact with something on hard turns?

I'll be swapping out the front struts within the next few weeks and maybe something will come to light then.

Check also the sway bar bushing, this was my problem after I put everything new on the front and I was still with the noise/vibration! just check

It's really worn I can see visible cracks in it. I just question if it would result in the hard turn lump // pulsing vibration I'm feeling.

LOL! Darcars sucks around here! You might have been better off going across the street to Scandinavian Auto, some of the techs aren't great either but at least one of the techs (Edwin) is on SS and is very good. The service manager is a M-Fer... Or you could have taking it to Volvo5.0 shop in Bethesda next to Martens Volvo which is the best dealer in MD.

I'd also look at wheel bearing, if they are bad they'll cause vibration.

Have you grabbed the axles to see if there is excessive play in the CV joints? I would start there.

With just the one side in the air the parts don't rotate independent of each other. Not sure yet about in an out play (ha)

It was a very last minute situation and I needed someplace I could leave it and know it would be taken care of in 24-48 hours. Sure enough it was done before the next day was out.

Wouldn't the bearing shake all the time though?

Sounds like a wheel bearing on its way out, but could be axle related if the axle is binding only when turned. If you can get the axle out of the passenger wheel hub and spin the bearing by hand, you'll immediately know if it's bad. A bad bearing won't turn freely at all.

I've had wheel bearing only vibrate at certain speeds on the hiway and it wasn't an out of balance tire. Vibration was still there when I swapped tires, replace the bearing, problem gone...

If it's really bad it will vibrate all the time, you'll even feel it in braking too. Easiest way to check is jack up the car grab the wheel at the 12 and 6 o'clock position and shake it, if it's got play it's bad.
