Volvinator
Hello, first time poster here. This weekend I noticed fuel coming from the top of the tank on the drivers side. Had recently filled the tank, and had driven 41 miles. The leak stopped by the time I reached 90 or so miles. I ran across this thread: http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/162715-1998-v70xc-p0455-code-fuel-smell-outside-car/"> This is on a 98, but it appears very similar to my tank. Am wondering if there are inspection ports as dropping the tank seems like a PITA last resort. Thanks for any insight.

Ihatespeedbumps
Your fuel pump is leaking most likely. If you pull out the seat bottom and rear back seat you will be able to access the fuel pump cover. Volvo issued a recall on this several years ago, may be worth calling your dealer to find out if it was ever completed.
Fran9690
The recall on these only went for 10 years and 150k iirc, haven't had one come in our shop in a while for the recall. We still goodwill them depending on how far out of mileage/time they are though if the recall did apply.
DVolvoguy850T5
Replaced my leaking pump last summer. 02 xc. Two access covers under the rear seat, left cover has the left sender and siphon. The right cover contains the pump. This is where the leak is. I bought my Bosch replacement from eBay for $159 and bought a special socket. Wrench for $37 from eBay as well. Doesn't leak any more. I called Volvo to see if they would honor the recall but they said they would just give me a break on the labour. I just replaced the pump my self and saved $700 bucks. I just watched a couple of videos on YouTube and went for it. Success.
JA VOLVO
My mom just had this issue on her 04 S60. The shop replaced the fuel pump, but she still had a gas smell. It turned out that the sender side also had a crack and was leaking. So just keep in mind, it could be either side or both.

That's new for me. I personally have never seen the ejector side level sender unit have a crack and leak. I've seen the o-ring fail or other shops rolled the o-ring and it leaked though. JA VOLVO
My indy had not seen it before either. But after doing the fuel pump on the car, my mom still had a faint smell outside the car when parked in the garage over night. They could not find the cause. Then they had an S80 come in with the same smell issue and the sending unit side was obviously cracked. They called my mom and asked her to bring it back in as they had something else to check. Hers was cracked as well, but not obvious until you pulled it off and really looked. They were surprised for sure as they had never seen that side fail either.
