adamdrives
I've heard the P2s like to eat control arm bushings. Any recommendations on brand? I was planning on going Meyle HD but saw some mixed reviews (bushing failure after 20k). For my friends 04 xc70.
wizzard_al
iPD just came out with some of their own, and I bought a pair. Had Myle and they did wear out. iPD said they stopped selling those because of the failure rate. Not always immediately but sooner than anyone would like. I'll see how the iPD ones last. adamdrives
The $79 dollar ones? They are the only ones besides meyle and oem so I assume so.
thedrill
Just change out the bushings, as there is no ball joint to wear out on the arm.. I have done 3 sets this way, and you keep the genuine Volvo arms too. Ebay 251521502445
wizzard_al
Problem with replacing the bushings is that front ones are supposed to go in only one way, so that means they are turned one specific way. Dealers locally hate doing that, they've actually had some that went in wrong and had to do them again. But I have a mechanic at a local dealership who has done them and says it is a breeze, if you are careful and know what you are doing.
Flukey
The replacement bushings are indexed. You have to be careful about pressing new ones in.In addition, the control arms must be loaded with the weight of the front end when you tighten the bolts. It aint rocket science but getting the old bushes out it a pain in the ass. adamdrives
Thanks for the input guys. I ended up with re-bushed arms from Nick at re-volv and delphi ball joints. Great deal on a pair of arms with OEM bushings at less than half the price and Nick is great to do business with. Nice that the joints are separate unlike the 800s. Have had to replace many a control arm on 850s with okay bushings due to failed joints. Not so nice is the car is question had been eating bushings, turns out it's because he has a bent subframe. Could see a small buckle by the rear bolt on the arm, must have been pushed into the subframe with considerable force. Guy said he hit a curb a few winters ago and his mechanic could never get the car to stop vibrating on the highway, eating bushings etc. The bolt head itself was slightly cocked ie not parallel to ground, that was my clue. Midnight Caller
Watch those Delphi ball joints closely, as I have a few friends that cheaped out and used them and they started knocking after 6 months tops. Delphi is not that ok in quality, better use Lemforder, it's under 40$ (at least here)
adamdrives
I'm not happy about the Delphis, but they were pretty much given to me so I can't complain. I still may return them for something else. Lemforder would be higher up on my list.
thedrill
Glad you got it sorted and used the Volvo arms with new bushings.. shame about the bent frame.
adamdrives
Looks like re-volv may help me with that too ;)
boxpin
I was going to try the poly bushings from FCP. Got them pressed in and then could not get the arm back in the car. Turned out this was the problem from the factory. Crap stuff.
