XC70 tire options

(I can't imagine this isn't a repeat question but when I ran a few searches I found nothing...so my apologies if you have seen this before.)

I've got a 2005 XC70 and am about to pick up a 2004 XC70.  Both are going to need tires.  My buddy runs General Grabber AT2s on all his XCs and loves them...but he lives out in the desert on the top of a hill, so he needs serious tires.

I live in Northern California so I want tires that can handle a bit of rain in the winter but that have decent summer performance grip and don't wear too quickly. (yes, I'd like to have my cake...and eat it too.)  ...or course I wouldn't mind tires that would get me up to Tahoe but I may just buy a second set for those trips.  I know that noise is the biggest issue with tires on my 850s - is that an issue with the XC70s?

Suggestions?

Wow - looks like a great tire that does seem to have it all.  It appears there is now a DWS 06, which ranks #2 in the category at tirerack.com.  (BF Goodrich gforce comp2 A/S ranks only slightly higher but I think it is also more expensive.)

Running DWS 06 on my S70.  Seems to be providing better tire wear than the previous generation DWS did.  Excellent traction in rain and snow.

  • 2 weeks later...

Didn't like the Conti DWS on my wagon, they tend to flat spot over night and are lumpy every morning.  Maybe they've fixed this, I don't know.  They are quiet running and grip well in dry/wet.  I'd describe them as "Michelin like" but they flat spot every day which I find incredibly annoying.

I have Michelin Premier A/S on my wife's '04 XC70 and my '99 XC70.  Love them.

If you are a Costco member, they frequently have buy 3 get 1 free.  Works out to be very affordable and the service is good.

That's great info on the Conti's - thanks.  I've never noticed flat spotting overnight with any tires but maybe that is 1) because of where I live (never too hot or too cold) and/or 2) because I've never run big bubble tires like these before (I have always run very low-profile tires on my cars.)

We do have a Costco and I have family members that get tires there but it is about 20 minutes from my house, where as my regular shop is two minutes away.  With the number of flats I get I prefer to buy my tires close to home so it is easy to repairs.  ...but maybe I'll see if they can get Michelin's.

I intend to replace the pirellis that came on my wife's with the True Contacts.

not as performance oriented, but it is a lifted station wagon after all.

Quite high marks for winter traction as an all season tire. Even though we've not seen snow all year :(

Those look pretty good.

On the topic of performance, I'm actually surprised at how well this car handles, even when compared to my 850 turbo with all the fancy aftermarket suspension mods.  That all-wheel drive certainly makes a difference.  My 850 turbo eats tires so I'm kind of excited to get some decent life out of the XC's tires, even if I go with the all-season ones that have the best dry weather performance.
