Broken Lug Bolt - 2001 S40

Although I have been driving for 25 years I am very new to the world of Volvos.  My son turned 17 a few months ago  and we bought him a "starter car" - a 2001 S40 with 160,000 miles on it.   It had a few dings and scratches on it and we replace a broken door, some headlights and such... So far it is doing pretty well.

I am no mechanic although I have done a few things on my other cars like change out radiators, starters, alternators, brakes, and stuff like that.

Last week we got him some tires (bought on Craigslist from a guy who just totaled his S40 so we got a great deal).   I changed 3 of the wheels without any problem but one of the lug nuts on the front passenger side was badly stuck (bad threads?) I was able to move it a little but even though I was careful to make sure the tiretool was square to the lug nut when I pressed on it hard the "lug nut bolt" (I am not sure what I should call it) broke off.  So right now I only have 3 lug nuts on the tire... so we are not driving it until we get this fixed.

I called a couple of shops who do wheel/brake work and they told me that some Volvo's can have the broken "bolt" taken out and a new one put on but other models would require having the entire hub replaced.  Possible even the whole "Knuckle" replaced - the guy called it a knuckle.

Does anyone know if on the 2001 S40 the "lug bolt" can be removed and replaced or does the entire hub or knuckled need to be replaced.  Also does anyone know of a link to how to do any of the above.

Thank you for any advice you can give this Volvo newbie.

Thank you both for your input... looks like I have one threaded response and one not threaded response.

I will try working it like it is threaded first and then if that does not work I will try the hammer approach.

Do I need a special tool to try and work the threads.  If I can't budge it I will try hammering it out.   Do I hammer straight from front of the hub to the rear or do I try to tap it out from the rear to the front.

If I screw it up and have to remove the hub, can I replace just the hub or do I have to take off the knuckle?

I know this is a lot of questions, but I have never encountered anything like this before.  I have changed rotors, calipers and pads but never this.

Thank you.

Midnight -

Thanks for the reply and the picture of the bolt.  I think I found a part number on line and I will try the local parts store to see if they have one in stock.. If not I will call the local Volvo store.  It will take a month or so before I get to this - it is cold here and there is snow on the ground and we don't have a garage, but hopefully in a month or so I can make this happen.  Luckily we have other cars to drive until then.

For someone living in Romania you have a nice command of the English language.

Have a nice weekend.

Heh, thanks. One of the first things we learn in foreign languages is the slang, curses and swears :))

I don't remember if you have to remove the whole bearing to get it out, but if you don't have enough space, you can get it out partially and then cut the head off with an angle grinder or a saw and get it out the front.

After doing this, you insert the new lug bolt, put some spacers or a big nut and tighten to pull it inside the bearing. Then just install the wheel and tighten the original nut and you're done.

If there is not enough room to get the old lug out of the back and have to cut it, I don't see anyway I can get the new one in from the back to draw in with the spacers and nuts.  Hopefully there will be enough room so I don't have to take the hub off.. I am not sure I have the ability or tools for that.

Again, I appreciate your help and when I get to this in a month or so I will let you know how it went.

  • 4 weeks later...

Thanks guys.. this past weekend I got the chance to work on the car and I was indeed able to beat the old lug stud out of the hub and replace with a new one.  It took several hits with the hammer but it worked great.  I was also able to insert the new stud without any issue at all.  A big relief!!
