2.3L engine differences

hey ya'll, while gathering parts and being scatterbrained for a trans swap in my 02 P2 T5, im starting to question just taking EVERYTHING out lol..

the car has 295k and needed a clutch..  i figured, "while im in there" go with a lower mile trans, R clutch, single mass, new slave, rear main, blah blah..  i guess it didn't occur to me until recently that the engine is probably just as tired as the clutch and trans are..

i would really hate to do the trans and later on have some engine issues..  i got a line on a couple low mile 2.3L engines - so low that i wouldn't even have to worry about timing belts, water pumps or breather systems for a couple years (which i would have to do on this original engine right away).

i want to stick with the 2.3 because i have had great experiences/reliability with them in all my 850s and i know they're just a stouter block..

my question is, what is the difference in my stock 'VIN 53' 2.3 and a 'VIN 62' 2.3??

right off from pictures it looks like some minor differences in intake manifolds and intercooler plumbing..  i know i can just swap things over from the stock setup if need be, but im more worried about wiring harness/sensor issues?

i dont want to swap in a low mile VIN 62 engine and find the harness plugs aren't compatible with sensors or there's things missing or extra?  and will this engine (which is meant for 03-04 70 series) bolt up ok to a 2000 m56h trans?

thank you so much guys

Vin 53 was from 97 to 2004. But you want the '01 or later, preferably the '02 or later, which had the longer rods, and better rod/stroke ratio. From '99 and later, they had VVT on exhaust, and and went to dual VVT when the B5244T5 engine came out.

The VIN 62 engines were: B5234T8 for 1999 V70R only and

B5234T9, which was the '03-'04 C70 convertible

For you, the '02 or later S60 or V70 B5234 would work great, and the C70 engine would work as well. Fortunately, the C70 engine mounts the same way as the P2 engine mounts (unlike the later C70 cars, which have a motor mount that mounts between the right side strut tower and the head but these are also B5254 engines)

The only problem with the trans is getting a clutch disc that matches the diameter and spline count of the transmission. Volvo changed that around '02 or so. Earlier trans had fewer splines and a smaller diameter shaft.

The only sensor you probably have to worry about on the engine is the temp sensor, and I think those are the same from '02 on. You will want to use your mounting bracket for the crank sensor, as well as your crank sensor, at least if you use the B5234T9 engine. The exhaust cam sensor is the same for the engines after '02.

dude, WOW.

im at a loss for words with not only your knowledge, but how well you've managed to articulate it so darn clearly that EVERY SINGLE QUESTION i worried about was answered and backed up with engine codes!

holy crap you know your engines.  THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU..

be well sir and have a great Easter..  you are perfect!

To elaborate on what wizzard_al said about the 02+ transmissions, the input shaft is larger and has a different spline count (23x1). To use a SMF with an 850 R pressure plate in one of those trans, run a Sachs SD693 clutch disc. It's actually intended for a 87 RX-7 but has the same diameter and friction material as the 850 R clutch disc with the correct input shaft size/spline count. That's what I (and several others on here) are using with their SMF/M66s.

The B5234T8 (from a 99 R) is the same motor as a B5234T3 but with different turbo/injectors, there's nothing mechanically different about the block itself

OK.  so the VIN 53 and VIN 62 are *mechanically the same motors.. same preferred rods/stroke, yah??  just the turbos and injectors were different..

i knew there was some spline differences and the 02 trannys were a hit or miss year (as to which input shaft).  to simplify this, i went with an m56h from a 2000 C70 since i KNEW i could use the R clutch on this trans.

it just happend to be the only/last manual they had here at Tom's foreign lol

thank you for your input always!

FTR, I had been running the clutch and flywheel recommended here w/out an issue for about 6 months before my engine issues, thanks to the recommendations from the guys here. It's noisier than the DMFW I originally installed, but nothing horrible and I prefer it's performance over the DM I originally put in it when I did the swap by far. I'm also in the middle of installing a 2.3 out of a (early) 2001 T5 in my R. I've already replaced the timing belt on the engine I purchased because it has 110k miles on it, I still need to clean the PVC system and replace a few other things. Everything about the 01 2.3 is identical to the stock 2.3 in my 99 R, except the turbo and the injectors.

Unfortunately I've been swamped with work and family things, so it's kind of just sitting for now. I'll be busy the next few weekends too, I'm hoping after that I can have a weekend to wrap it up. I'm also sending my stock R turbo out for a rebuild before I put it in.

hey bro, i posted in another thread about the K24...  i think you should do some research and save yourself some dough and rebuild your turbo yourself (whatever you're going to run)!  it's really not hard and it's actually quite gratifying to complete it yourself KNOWING it was done carefully.  the hardest part was cleaning up the caked on carbon/burnt oil..  basic tools with the exception of snap-ring pliers (only $25 from lowes) and some assembly lube ($6) and the rebuild kit itself (easily found for under $100) and you can save good money and none of that 'sending' anything anywhere!  anyways, im familiar with the DM to SM conversion as Bmac did a manual swap for me with SM and honestly my car doesn't make a sound..  quiet idle and super smooth clutch and performance i can't complain!

im grabbing a super low mileage VIN 62 engine so im not worrying about the timing belt, water pump or PCV!  im just going to bolt on my hybrid K24, greens, ARD crank pulley and do the trans work and call it a day now that i know everything is the same!  thanks Andy and Al  =)
