Dead module to the point where it wasn't recording mileage?

It would record intermittently - the needles would stop dead sometimes, others I'd complete my trip without issue.

Looking at the paperwork the car was registered in 2011 with 188,000 kms - I got it in 2015 with 204,000 kms

Doesn't seem possible, glad this car was cheap.

Replaced it with one of your rebuilt modules and everything is golden - reason I ask is because I'm wondering if I can see just how much mileage is on this thing and if it's worth keeping or parting out

I can't say for sure but I believe the mileage is stored in the ECU and can be read with VIDA.

I don't believe so. Assuming the mileage is read by the ABS sensors on the wheels, which feed into the ABS module, which goes to the ECU (or cluster) that would assume both the sensors AND the module would need to work in order to record mileage. I do not believe it will record mileage anywhere in the car unless the ABS module is fully functional and reading the sensors on the wheels.

On 850s, mileage is stored in the cluster, not the ECU. I would assume same thing for s70s. If speedometer wasn't working, I would bet that the mileage is inaccurate.

When the needles go dead the digital readouts for trip and odometer would read " - - - - - " so I think my actual mileage is an unsolvable mystery at this point

Find two known accurate mileage readings from your paperwork, extrapolate mileage over time with your driving habits and you can get a rough estimate.
