S8ET6
Now that Spring is right around the corner, I'm beginning to feel motivated to address some long neglected areas of my car (2000 S80)... First things first, I need to identify and resolve an annoying shimmy that I have. It seems to come and go - or, at least the intensity of it varies, from a slight vibration to a full shimmy... It isn't necessarily speed related... sometimes it's more intense at slow speeds and other times its worse at highway speeds...but you can always feel it in the steering wheel. Sometimes it's similar in feel to a flat spot on a tire, other times it feels more like driving with an out of balanced wheel or loose lug nuts... I've installed new: axles, hubs, rotors, ball joints, urethane bushing (since I was working in the control arm area anyway), wheels and tires but its still there. The only remaining possible causes that I can think of would be either the subframe bushings... maybe the steering rack (both of these seem to be a reach though)... I'll be dropping the subframe to pull the oil pan and replace the my o-rings soon and when I do I plan to replace the subframe bushings too... Anything else that any of you might suggest I look into? Motor Mounts? (My honda odyssey had a annoying vibration whenever eco mode activated due to a bad motor mount) I'm open to any/all suggestions and feedback that don't involve the destruction or elimination of this vehicle from my life (at this point in time). Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?
NEU
I had a vibration that was caused by worn motor mounts, if they are old might as well get them changed. Also I currently have a worn rack and it will vibrate occasionally at different speeds. With the rack I could tell it was it because it could tell something was up with it when backing up with the wheels at full lock it would "wiggle" similar to a worn tirerod. And all my tirerods are fairly new, the rack has 225K miles.
S8ET6
I forgot to add that I replaced the tie rods too. Thanks for the input...I guess that I'll look into replacing the motor mounts too. Any other possibilities?
troyhyde
Sounds like a bad tire or dragging brake pad.
NEU
How are your wheel bearing? That could cause some vibration too.
S8ET6
New bearings, tie rods and brake pads too...
UncleBoost
I had this with my S80... was typically @65 mph...got worse anything over that.. What it turned out to be was a bad INNER CV joint Boot that was ripped and had slung all the grease out of the bearing. The 3 bearing were dry and this caused the shimmy..it was worse with a passenger.. So I packed some grease in it and wrapped it with stretch wrap until better weather (spring broke..).It worked...when spring came I just replaced the entire axle. but it wasn't vibrating or shimmying when i did my temporary fix.. MrWinkey
I agree ...sounds like you need a RH axle from the symptoms you posted
flyfishing3
Dave, did your favorite bar close so you are here more now, 😜
co21ss
It sounds like a bad axle, even though you already replaced both of them. Perhaps the seal didn't seat correctly and is causing issues, or maybe a bad boot that dried up the bearings?? The only other suggestion I have would be the sway bar end links possibly since I didn't see it listed on your repairs. Good luck!
