(_8*(l)Homer
Hi All, So, this is a strange title, but I have not idea how to describe it in a few words. I have a 98 V70R AWD. When I replaced my propellor shaft I needed to lift the entire car off the ground. I put the car on some big logs so there would be no way it would go anywhere. I started the car and put it in drive to hear the sound of the bad center carrier bearing, but I noticed something strange: The speedo was showing ~ 15 or 20 mph, but the front right wheel was turning far slower than the rest of the wheels. I, in my infinite wisdom, grabbed the tire to see if I could just plain stop it from turning, and I could stop it. I would hear a clicking sound when I did. I had my wife give it a bit of gas and got the speedo up to 50 mph, and I could still stop the wheel, although when I'd let go, it would eventually catch and start to spin, but never as fast as the rest. I also have had a clunking sound coming from the front right when I go over bumps ever since I got the car in 2011. I've not been able to identify the cause of the clunking (the strut mount seems to be OK because I can't turn the nut with out it springing back). Here is a list of what has been replaced to try to fix the clunk: New OEM control arms New aftermarket wheel bearing RF End link (IPD HD) RF axle replace by previous owner in 2010 Front sway bars by P/O 2010 So, I guess I have a few questions. Why can I stop the wheel with my hands? Is the clunking when going over bumps related? If not, what is causing the clunking? Please let me know your thoughts. Matty Moo
because you have on open differential, only one wheel spins. clunking is probably a spring seat.
polskamafia mjl
Open diff will cause that. Do it again except this time try to block the other wheel. If your slow wheel speeds up everything is alright.
troyhyde
Clunk may be the subframe mounts, there is a "fix" via giant o-rings for the rear mounts. If all other suspension is good, look there.
Fudge_Brownie
The 'clicking' sound might be the ABS pump being applied by the traction control system due to the speed variations detected in the wheels. IIRC, the rear in those is some variation of limited slip differential which is why you weren't noticing the an unpowered wheel in the back.
