99 V70r Turbo Options

Recommended Posts

I have a 99 V70r that I'm in the middle of swapping the engine in. The motor going in it is another (stock) 2.3. My current turbo is a angle flange 18t that I planned on taking that to Michigan Turbo to have rebuilt. About 2 months ago, they gave me a quote of $350 to rebuild it. Today I was going to drop my turbo off, but decided to call them before I dropped it off and got a new quote for... $800 dollars to rebuild it.

I don't need to go into details but obviously they won't be doing anything for me. So no I'm curious what route you guys would go. I really don't want to modify my downpipe, but would if that would make things easier. My current downpipe is a 3" mandrel bent one that I made.

Not looking to make HUGE horsepower; right now, with my stock 18t my car should be around 300hp. I'm fine with what I had, the only reason I'm looking to rebuild my 18t is that I'm pretty sure the seals in my stock one are shot (oil going through it), plus it has 200k miles on it. I can get a new, stock 18t turbo thru Volvo for around $900. Another option I found is these replacement cartridge on eBay. I'm a tad nervous to use that though, because there's a lot of negative feedback about them being Chinese crap, and about the guy sending the wrong parts, etc.

So... any recommendations? What would you guys do? FWIW, I currently have a ARD Blue tune, a Snabb FAI pipe and RIP kit, a 3" mandrel DP and a high flow cat, then a 2.5" cat back to dual Borla mufflers.

I believe i told you this before, but rebuild it yourself.

You can get a rebuild kit from gpopshop for $99 and have it rebuilt in an afternoon/evening.

I rebuilt mine, now have 11k mi on it without issue.

You did tell me that in my engine thread a while back, I'm just nervous to do it because I've read so many horror stories. But... if you have 11k miles with no issues obviously yours is good. Did you have it balanced after you rebuilt it?

I was very anal about marking the existing orientation of every rotating component (nuts on shaft as well) so I didn't need it balanced.

I spent 15 minutes ensuring that the pieces were perfectly aligned when I finally tightened it all.

Used some bomb ass Sally Hansen (code 420, hot pink, thanks to my brother for grabbing that...) nail polish to mark the pieces.

or rebuild yourself, i did a 16t that was leaking oil bad and have had no problems for 15k

Is this cartridge basically a stock replacement? The description says, "Performance Thrust Bearing Kit with larger thrust ring and flinger"... this is greek to me :)

I think tonight I'll pull my turbo apart and try to get my cartridge out, just to see what I'm in for.

Unbolt the CHRA and compressor side from the hotside. Do NOT remove the entire turbo!
