S70 T5 Exhaust Cam Click

I've been dealing with this for a while, and I'm ready to push this car over a cliff. My cousin and I have been trying to get the timing fixed on his 1999 S70 T5, and this is the main problem now.

I attached a video that shows what the "clicking" looks like from the back of the engine. As you can see, the exhaust camshaft is clicking forward every time you hear the click sound.

So far, I have removed the re-torqued the CVVT hub/exhaust camshaft sprocket assembly. The clicking does not occur as often, but it's clearly still there. When the hub was off, I heard something inside of it, like it might have been damaged, but I couldn't be sure. I don't know if the spring had broken and that's why I'm getting a clicking, or it's something else, but I'm 99.9% sure it's the hub.

Does anyone have any other ideas? Should I get a used hub and see if that will work?

The most important thing to me right now is to get this car running. I've spent way too much time trying to isolate a single problem to give up now.

Watched the video. I'm wondering at this point if something hasn't broken inside the hub. Do you have access to another one? I can honestly say I've never heard one make that noise before.

I was thinking the same thing. I was at the junkyard today, and I was going to get one but the plug was stripped. If I go back soon enough, I'll make sure to bring a large enough flat head to loosen it. It also seemed odd to me that the plug on the junkyard car is a T50 rather than a T55 like the bolt. I guess it was different for 2000.

I'll probably check out the other yard next week or find one that's already out of the car!

New video everyone...

This is what it's doing now. I replaced the CVVT hub, and now it's running like this. He's turning it off, though, it will keep running, but we're afraid of causing any further damage.

What I think is that I might not have seated the exhaust cam to where the belt is fully and properly seated in the teeth. I'm not 100% sure it's off, but I guess it's possible.

Seriously doubt it's bent valves, as much as my cousin wants to believe that.

Little update... it is idling now. I added a gallon of 93 octane and a bottle of Lucas and after a few minutes it was running better. Then, it got bad again and started having a little shake every few seconds. It sounds a lot like a diesel now.

Maybe my new VVT gear is bad still?

Highly doubtful the replacement gear is defective. Did you pull it off a similar vehicle? Have you been able to set any DTC's in the time it was running?

Yeah, after yesterday (and today too) I don't think the new hub is the problem. It could possibly be my alignment of the gear itself on the belt, but I'm not entirely sure.

Yes, came off the exact same car, a 1999 S70 T5.

I pulled a few DTCs today, the first one that came up was P0301 (Cylinder 1 misfire). I swapped the cyl. 1 and 2 coils, and it stayed the same, then eventually turned into P0300 (multiple cyl. misfire). Then, I ran to the junkyard to get a fuel injector (for cylinder 1) and pressure regulator just to test, and nothing changed. Then, I swapped the coils back and now cylinders 1 and 2 are both misfiring. I also want to say there was another code but I'm not sure. Might have just been P0300 again too.

Tomorrow I plan to re-check the alignment of the exhaust cam gear (no factory alignment mark on this one, so it's hard to tell exactly where it's supposed to be. I might just switch the hub to the old cam gear.), add more fresh gas, change the fuel filter, and probably run a can of fuel cleaner through again. Yesterday I only added a gallon of 93 octane (cousin didn't have a bigger gas can) and a bottle of Lucas fuel treatment. That actually smoothed it out tremendously compared to what it was on Tuesday.

I also noticed a bad sulfur smell coming from the exhaust, and if I revved it it would puff out a little smoke and smell real bad. Also a loud hissing coming from the turbo and LOTS of shaking when I put it into gear (probably due to the misfire).

This was taken yesterday. It sounds about the same now.

I am VERY happy to report the car is running properly now, and better than the day he bought it!

After I fine tuned the timing today, the car was still misfiring on cylinders 1 and 2, even though the CEL was off and the ECU wasn't throwing any DTCs. The coils were getting spark, the fuel injectors were working, I had good gas in it, I replaced the fuel filter, and the spark plugs are almost new. None of us had any idea what the problem could be.

So, thinking that valves could be damaged, we went on to run a compression test. Cylinder 3 (which was firing correctly) had 165 PSI. Cylinder 2 (one of the misfiring cylinders) had 155. Normal for a T5, from what I've read.

So we went on to replace the boots and springs on the first two ignition coils. Nada. Eventually, after messing around with a few more things, we swapped the connectors for coils 1 & 2 while we had it running. The engine INSTANTLY smoothed out! It sounded beautiful purring on all 5 cylinders again!

I'm happy with the timing adjustment now and my cousin has put over 120 miles on the car already and she has been running beautifully. Very happy we didn't have to give up on the car at 202,000 miles. Now for another 200k!

Thanks everybody for all of your help!
