ryan850-t5
Is it worth it to buy used AC components? OEM new from Tasca and FCP are 400 and 200 min for compressor, etc. Have people bought these used with any luck. don't want to buy used and then have it go bad. thanks
H0lD mY d6InK
Used Condenser or compressor maybe (depends on miles and if it was a leak free car it is coming out of) Otherwise everything else get new, rest of it is cheaper than those 2 and you pretty much need new to ensure a good a/c system. I just did mine and replaced everything with new components. I only used non rusted lines from another vehicle. it works and runs ice cold. ryan850-t5
Where did you get the condenser and compressor? New prices are like 400 and 200...
H0lD mY d6InK
I got the condenser from a local radiator store (it is an all metal piece so brand doesn't really matter) . The compressor I got from a buddy of mine who owns a Volvo shop. He gave a new Valeo (which is oem) for $280. All in all I paid about $500 in parts. I got new Compressor, condenser, accumulator, orifice tube, and evap core.
Scootdiggity
hey there I went the remanufactured route on ebay had compressor in for 3 years no problem cost 140 and car still freezes me out here are some examples and you can do a search yourself as well http://www.ebay.com/itm/A-C-Compressor-For-1994-1999-Volvo-2-3l-2-4l-850-S70-C70-V70-R57520-/172266827423?fits=Make%3AVolvo|Model%3A850&hash=item281be72e9f:g:bicAAOSwARZXmmCD&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/AC-Compressor-Fits-1993-1994-1995-1996-1997-Volvo-850-1yr-Warr-R57519-/252446024926?fits=Make%3AVolvo|Model%3A850&hash=item3ac6f4a4de:g:rpMAAOSwqfNXmkBp&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/19049-57519-Volvo-850-OE-Reman-A-C-Compressor-w-clutch-Reman-in-USA-/162076312830?fits=Make%3AVolvo|Model%3A850&hash=item25bc8044fe:g:KY4AAOSwk5FUsDHo&vxp=mtr For condensor I used the tyc 4659 also had no issues
tighe
I just replaced a "known good" compressor that was installed a year ago. I spent the last year replacing other parts because the AC was weak, and we thought the compressor was good, which it apparently wasn't. Wasted a lot of time and money because I didn't buy new from the beginning. Lesson learned for me.
H0lD mY d6InK
Honestly, buying a re-manufactured compressor is like buying a re-manufactured auto-zone alternator. Not saying it cant work but not worth it for the amount of problems reported. My a/c is seriously cold when it isn't 95 degrees and 100% humidity outside. Even my buddy said holy $hit. When it comes to the a/c do it right the first time and don't cut corners.
Scootdiggity
My friends have used remans as well and no issues not like autozone because not made in china they are oem cores rebuilt none of use have had issues. If he wants to spend the extra money for new that is his choice just giving him options and my experiences
540i6speed
I am parting my 95 850 out , the drivetrain and a/c worked perfect with no leaks if you are interested in going with used parts. Can sell you any of the parts you need, have compressor, lines, condensor, etc. you would want a new dryer either way though
hootie6828
Yeah, i've had good luck with used compressors in the past, but that's probably about the only used a/c part I would use, definitely not a condensor.
Matty Moo
I don't see a problem with a used compressor, condensor neither as long as it isn't banged up. Evaporator...new only, too much work getting in there to cheap out. Receiver/drier...new every time the system has been open. The dessicant inside is shot. I have a vacuum pump and gauges, I don't mind AC work. It's actually pretty simple if you know the theory behind it.
ryan850-t5
Seems like the best route to go might be the re-man compressor. What do people think about the Nissens brand for condensor? I usually try to go OEM but the Nissens is like 60 where as the OEM is like 200+. I wouldn't mind going used for the condensor but I'd imagine it might be hard finding a good used one considering the age of these cars now. (unless someone replaced with new recently and now are selling) Also go new with everything else.
