br-549
Hello, I have a line on a V70 XC in clean shape that needs a tranny. I have read all over the place about the issues with that vintage. I also have a line on a 2004 FWD from an S60. Can I use a FWD trans by bolting on the AWD parts and make it an AWD trans? Can I convert a 2001 XC to FWD if I install the 2004 FWD trans? Is the 2004 trans compatible with the 2001? I have the computer for the 2004. What else will I need? I thought I had seen pictures a while back but cannot find the threads. I do not want to take on the project unless there is some hope it can work. Thanks, B- '03 S60, 175K miles
Ol' Dirty Noodle
FWD is only FWD
br-549
Can you make an AWD FWD? In other words - remove the XC AWD transmission and drive shafts and install the FWD gear from an S60? I just thought it would be a cheap way to get a wagon out of the process. Thanks for your patience for a newby.
Ol' Dirty Noodle
Yes. More to it than that though, different mounts and brackets gotta find one that works for your setup
yangotang
Yes, it's possible. You need: FWD trans, the rear engine mount from a FWD car, the rear engine mount (hydraulic), steering rack from a FWD car, and you'll need to modify the downpipe length. Ihatespeedbumps
It should be noted that an 03+ trans will not swap into an 01-02 without some wiring changes and different TCM logic. It's not as easy as swapping brackets and mounts.
br-549
It looks like I should consider the 2001 V70 XC as FWD. I have the front cross member from a 2004 S60 including the rack, transmission and shafts, TCM/ECM. I will need to look into the mounts as I am just learning about Volvos. I cut the wire harness from them, but could graft it all back together again if needed! What is different about the wiring and what is involved? I will hopefully have the complete exhaust system among other stuff tomorrow. The previous owner of the S60 pulled the engine already so I should have everything from the S60. I figured I could put a Volvo V70 together for less than $1000. No problem if it is only FWD.
br-549
I am going to pass on doing such a project for now. The transmission I had a line on fell through.
MyBrickIsSlow
Have you considered a M56 or M66? Not sure where you are located but I know of a few in central Pa. Prices are all pretty reasonable. Of course you have to get the computer programmed.
br-549
Thanks for the reply - I think that I will definitely consider this as an option for a future project. I have worked on our personally owned Chrysler and Ford products for more than 30 years. It was not until I started working on my wife's S60, infrequently as it has been, that I have appreciated them more. I will stay tuned to this website so I can learn more. I get over to the Cleveland area several times per year, I will keep this in mind. Thanks for the suggestion.
burnout8488
If the P2 is anything like P80, you can mount the AWD engine mounts to a FWD transmission with no issue. The original AWD steering rack can be used as well. (No rear hydraulic mount)
