savannahvolvoguy
Hello. I know this is an issue that has been brought up a thousand times but I'm anxious about performing this service so I'm looking for thoughts. I have a 2005 S60 with ~125k miles (just did TB and PCV, need to do front cam seals) and a 2007 xc70 with ~115k miles (just about to do TB and other drive train fluids, all else good). Both were bought at about 100k miles from individuals who were having their car serviced by someone (i.e. not themselves) such as the dealer or an independent mechanic. I'm not 100% sure on either service history. Before either car gains too much more mileage, I want to renew the transmission fluid. Without KNOWING what has been done to either transmissions am I safe to use fluid color as an indicator of if it's safe to flush? By that I mean can I safely proceed with a flush if the fluid is clear and only slightly browned? What would you do with these cars? Has anyone experienced transmission failure due to fluid changes done too late. I keep reading of people warning about it but I haven't seen many if any posts of people complaining about it actually happening to them. I'm a full time student and I work and I've got a baby coming so I'm hoping to all this maintenance and more done over the winter break when I don't have classes. Thanks a ton for the advice. Ihatespeedbumps
I flush the fluid in high mileage units all the time with no problems. The most important thing here is to make sure the level is correct with the chart found in VIDA at the corresponding temperature. These transmissions are very sensitive to incorrect fluid level. Also, make sure to use Mobil 3309 or equivalent! Amazon has an excellent price on a case of it ;)
savannahvolvoguy
Thanks a lot! The amazon case is what I'm going to buy. I'm also planning on doing AOC, angle gear, and rear diff on the XC. It'll be a busy December. and spark plugs... and I have a 95 honda civic del sol that's being cranky to troubleshoot... Ihatespeedbumps
Sounds like you've got your work cut out for you. This sounds fan boyish but OEM plugs are the only way to go on these cars.
savannahvolvoguy
Its really not that fan boyish. I agree OEM plugs are the only way to go. This is the second set I've put in and I wouldn't use anything buy OE plugs in the future either. They're kinda expensive but they're good. How often do you guys change your spark plugs? What's so wrong with being a fan boy anyway? That's practically how people know me...That guy who is strangely into those weird Swedish boxy cars... Then I get to explain that they are oh so much more than that.... if you maintain them... yourself.
Ihatespeedbumps
I tend to change mine every 60kish but have often seen sets last 100k before issues arise.
savannahvolvoguy
Just curious... why do we do the pump out method for tx fluid instead of multiple drop and fills with a drive cycle in between?
Ihatespeedbumps
Because that takes longer.
laird
I just bought an 05 S60 2.5T with 225,000 miles. First thing I did was the tranny flush. Better immediately. Also, the 05 has a tranny dipstick:) I also bought the NGK platinum plugs for less than half of OEM and they work great.

savannahvolvoguy
My plan is to do it tomorrow so we will see how it goes. Which end do I disconnect from the TX cooler and attach the hose to? Is it the upper or the lower? by the way Mobil 3309 has gone down on amazon. Last I looked it was about $69 so if anyone's looking for a deal... its out there now.
Ihatespeedbumps
for both the models in your signature it's the lower hose.
savannahvolvoguy
It's done however I've slightly overfilled it. When warm the level is about a tick or so above the full line. Is there an easy way to correct this? Do I need to? Should I put a fee more miles on it before measuring the level? Other than that this job wasn't tough at all. Thanks a lot guys! savannahvolvoguy
Okay false alarm. I drove it to work today... About ten miles and now it's sitting right on the high mark. Cool!
