grasshopperR
Alright, so my mother has a 02 V70 XC that I have cared for extensively. After fixing all the initial issues after getting it (including replacing the valve body), it has been fine and never had any issue what so ever. Ok, now back to the point, my mother was starting the car a few hours ago and told me that there was a strange noise followed by a message saying that the coolant was low. I assumed that this was a problem with the sensor and not with the cooling system, but when I checked the overflow tank, it was almost empty! This was incredibly confusing to me, as I had coincidentally checked the coolant the day before when checking the oil. I then drove the car all over town and covered at least 50-60 miles with no problem. My mother then drove the car later that night only about 5 miles and had no problem. But now she has no coolant. I have already had a bad experience with a head gasket on my former R project and I feel like I know all the symptoms for these cars (I didn't notice any of them here). Also, there is no visible leak under the car or at the radiator or at either ends of either of the main radiator hoses. I also checked to see if the overflow tank was leaking (it wasn't). Where are some good places to start looking for actual leaks on these cars? I know that there are quite a few coolant lines on the p2 volvos. It just doesn't make sense that It would lose that much coolant in that little of time with no warning.
thedrill
Check by your right foot when your sitting in the driver seat, the O rings fail on the heater core quite often. There may be a stain down the carpet from coolant.
hootie6828
Check for external leaks. If you find none, pressure test the cooling system. If its not holding pressure, you have a leak somewhere, and if it's not external, there is only one other place it can be going. Wonder if the odd noise at startup your mother described was a misfire due to coolant in a cylinder?

The car won't start (I filled the coolant) and says "Reduced engine performance" as well as giving a code for crank position sensor. Any advice here? or new thread? thedrill
Did you knock the electrical plug off the gas pedal?

I ordered a new sensor though, so we will see if that solves the issue.
