XC70 vs XC90 Haldex

I have a 2002 XC70 and a 2005 XC90. Love them both but when it comes to traction the XC70 can do circles around the XC90. Is this normal?

I dont live in the snow but do get rain. When I am at a light and start to go with just a bit of aggressiveness the XC90 will spin the front wheels, it feels like a fwd car. I have to let off to get it to go. The XC70 on the other hand just launches, you can tell that all the wheels are contributing.

I took the XC90 to the snow and drove around. With traction control on I could tell something was happening because the car would not go with my foot giving it a push. Felt like all the wheels wanted to spin and it was being controlled. At one point I took traction control off and got on it. The car felt like everything was spinning but I am not sure. I never had anyone outside the car to confirm what was happening.

Do the Haldex system differ between the years? Is this normal behavior? When I bought the XC90 I was expecting it to drive like the XC70 and was very disappointed.

Being that it's a 2002 XC70, it should be Viscous Coupling like my 01 shouldn't it? That's a fairly different system from haldex and responds quite differently, which could cause the difference in behaviour you describe

Iirc, 02 was a changeover year for the awd, some still had a viscous coupler, and some had a newer style Haldex. Imo, the newer style is better, and is supposed to respond even faster, so that should not be the issue. Do you know the awd is working on the xc90? Have you ever checked the bevel gear coupler? Could even be as simple as different tires.

I know on earlier S60 awd's with haldex it is a much different system than my 2005 V70 is also, is that simply due to the fact that it's an S60 or are there different versions of haldex depending on year also?

Update:  Jacked up the front and let the front wheels turn...nothing. Even gave it a little throttle, not too much because I didnt want it to launch.

Cant understand a thing I am saying in the video but basically its not working. Should I be checking the collar next or should I look to see if the drive line is rotating while its up in the air?

Update 2:

Jacked it up again and did the same test. Watched the driveline...did not move. Guessing its the collar. Crap.

Jack up the front enough that you can get under the car. Leave it in park, car does not need to be running, and reach up over the exhaust right behind the subframe and try to turn the propshaft. If it turns freely, your coupler is bad, if you cant turn it, then the coupler is fine and the issue is in the rear end. Best to do this with the car cold so you don't burn yourself on the exhaust.
