So I bought an 04 XC90 T6...

Kind of an impulse buy, but the price was right and the interior is black leather in mint shape, exterior has a few minor scuffs but is also in very good shape. I figured if this ends up being a total basket case I can part it out and get my money back, but I think it's too nice for that.

Known problems I have are:

1. Battery is stone dead, it wont take a charge at all. The seller was able to jump start the xc so I could hear it run and test the engagement of the gears, but that's as far as I have taken it.

2. Idles rough/misfires - the worst case scenario is a burnt valve, but I think this might be an electronic problem or vacuum/boost leak, the misfire spreads to more than just one cylinder randomly. I have read that the CEM is a common failure item on this year.

3. Ignition Key will not release from column - from what I have read this is simply a frozen or misaligned cable between the column and shifter.

First thing will be to buy a battery and pull some codes, then I am going to pull the spark plugs and see what they look like, and do a compression test. I know the Gm transmission used in this model was problematic, but the fluid was nice and clean red and didn't smell burned, so hopefully someone has already taken care of that issue. Any other problem areas I should look for?

Got a new battery in it, and found thesecodes:

P2121 throttle pos sensor

P0300 Random misfire

P0302 Cyl 2 misfire

P0303 Cyl 3 misfire

P0305 Cyl 5 misfire

P2126 throttle pos sensor

CEM6C48

ECM-9520 Accelerator pedal signal

I could not get my scanner (icarsoft i906) to talk to the ETM... Is that not a relevant system on 04? I have heard that is a problem area on the 99-02 cars.

I removed and checked the plastic air intake pipes, they look good. Found a broken vacuum hose under the plastic intake pipes, it goes into the intake, so probably a pretty significant leak so I definitely need to fix that. Next is pull the plugs and coil packs and see if there are any damaged wires in there.
