XC90 2.5T - 240,000 miles :)

I have had great luck with our 240,000 mile XC90, but i have a recent problem that I am not sure how to diagnose.  The issues in order have been:

- Car started to have a "mis" where it would jerk and go into limp mode with an ABS, Airbag and Brake failure warning lights.

I hadn't done a tune up in a long time so I did coils and plugs along with replacing the battery (Battery dropped a cell)

- Car started showing a "low battery" warning around town, but when I would check it the voltage was fine

- On a 50 mile trip recently the "low battery" popped up again.  We limped the car and almost got home until a total shut down on the freeway.  This included all of the same failures above along with a popping noise down by the CEM and the dash blinking on and off.  After we got it home the battery was at 6V and the alternator was not putting out a charge.

I have now replaced the alternator 2x (i thought the first was bad out of the box) and am not getting any voltage from it (10V at idle both at the alternator and at the battery posts).  Needless to say, the car won't keep running and dies.

The car will run perfectly if i hook it up to a jump on my other car with a good alternator.

My questions are - Is a discharged battery enough to keep the regulator from allowing the alternator to charge?  or Is there something in the CEM that controlls the alternator / regulator to provide voltage?

I am currently charging the battery to make sure that isn't the issue, but if it doesn't work I am at a loss.

The only code is a CEM 1A64 (My AWD hasn't worked in years, but it isn't a need for us at all in Southern CA)
