erikv11
I am looking at an 06 R and based on some good advice on here want a shop's opinion on things, e.g. the AWD components and exhaust gases in coolant (safeguard against cracked cylinder walls). I have zero experience with P2 cars or with AWD. Here's the issue: Volvo dealer is all booked up until after to the holiday weekend, by next Tuesday the car may be sold to someone else. There is a decent Indy shop I can take it to, they do a lot of Volvo repair work but obviously they are not the dealer, for example I don't know that they are aware of the trouble spots on S60R's. I asked the indy if they would hook it up to VIDA they said "well not if the light isn't on" although I can tell I wasn't talking to their better techs, just the guy who answers the phone. He had to go ask the lead tech if they could fit the job in. Combustion gases they can check for of course, I can ask them to look at suspension (front struts were just done). For AWD trouble spots is a visual inspection going to tell them enough? I'm just looking for advice on if a decent Indy can tell me what I need to know, or should I hold out for taking it to the dealer. I've got good maintenance history on the car since 90k, it sits at 134k right now.
erikv11
I had the indy look at it, and thought he was great. Wish he was in my town. They are not too far, I will consider using him if I ever take a car to the shop. This R has a bad angle gear, so it is acting like FWD right now. Nothing leaks, driveshaft front bearing seems good, of curse don't know about rear diff since the drive shaft isn't turning. Suspension looks good, no combustion gases in the coolant. I may make an offer adjusted for the angle gear issue (and be prepared to spend more $).
Ihatespeedbumps
If they told you it needs an angle gear there is also a 99% chance it needs the AWD collar as well. They can be a bitch to get out sometimes.
erikv11
OK thanks. That's because its splines will be stripped out?

BlackT5
Check the serial number on the trans. http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread.php?304297-2006-2007-TF-80SC-Automatic-Transmission-Valve-Body-Issue-amp-Serial-Number-Info
erikv11
I couldn't find the trans serial number, looked and looked, finally pulled the air box to get a clear look at everything and it turns out the metal plate is missing. I can see the little rectangular mount location right where the plate is supposed to be. So even though I don't have the trans SN, the build date is 03/06 so it almost surely has the old (defective) style valve body. It seems to shift smoothly but I will check that out more carefully.
