supernoob
hey guys..... thinking about an XC70 wagon....or a v70 wagon non turbo reading here I am gonna stay away from 2000 and 2001 and 2002s, cuz of the trans and fly by wire issues I found a 2004 AWD xc70---price reflective of work needed I will work on stage zero stage 0 to keep it a good daily driver... ( had a bunch of 760s that I did that to..ran great). the front end feels sloppy , I am thinking that is struts...or maybe the control arm bushings or other bushings There is an oil leak on the pass front side, under the motor. Now, I know this might be hard to answer....but what are possible sources of the leak in that area? oil pan main seal looks like it is lower than the valve cover gasket area , so I am gonna say its not that any ideas? and, anything else I should look for? (door handles are ratty and so is are the sides of the console...can those parts be had cheaply....and easy to install? ) thank you! supernoob
Ihatespeedbumps
Front engine seals are likely the culprit of the oil leak. Also probably an indication that the PCV system needs some attention as well.
supernoob
Ok. Cool. Thanks. Understood on the PVC system Front engine seals like crank...camshaft...stuff like that? I would be doing a timing belt cuz its at 120k amd i dont have documentation of that. So i could get the front engine seals then...correct? Just two...or any more seals there.? I am liking the car even though it needs some work. So maybe.....standby for PICS! 😂😂😂 and...the factory tire size is 215/65/16 can i put on a wider size? How wide can i go? (i am trying to be aware of the 4wd system and the tires having influence on that) thanks for the help everyone! #firstFrontWheelAwdVolvo supernoob
supernoob
Is the RMS on that side of the engine? The pass front right side? Been reading some bad things about an RMS replacement...really hateful job Seems like the right pass side is the "front" of the engine...due to the belts and power steering pump being over there...but want to be sure. Is the rear main seal pass front right or on the driver front left side? thanks! SuperNoob
Ihatespeedbumps
The front engine seals (cam/crank) would be on the passenger side. Yes you can do the front engine seals while replacing the timing belt, but you'll need a camshaft locking tool. I made a video about the procedure here:
supernoob
Ok. Thanks. Two more things.... Can I go wider than 215/65/16 without hurting the AWD unit? Is there any other way to test the 4wd unit other than putting it on a lift ..in low gear..at idle..and watch all 4 of the wheels spin? Im not sure of the AWD cuz the front driver tire spins when you step on it. Thanks for ur help #IhateSpeedBumps for the help!
Ihatespeedbumps
You can probably go a little wider without hurting anything, honestly never tried. Easiest way to check the mechanical portion of the AWD system is to put in park and see if the driveshaft spins 360 degrees, if so, the AWD collar/angle gear input is stripped. supernoob
so the car lot selling the xc70 put it on a lift and got all 4 wheels to turn while in drive and the vehicle is in idle. the dealer says that there was an adapter unplugged aka must have been some wire unplugged. does that make sense?
