propav8r
2005 V70 T5A Hi all. This evening, I decided to install my OE trailer hitch and Curt powered trailer light adapter. Before starting all this, everything on my car worked as it should. The hitch installed fine. I disconnected the battery, installed the powered adapter as outlined in the instructions, and tested it. Works great. I installed the adapter as shown in this video, except I used waterproof splices and I pulled power from the large lug on the cargo area fuse panel instead of from the battery. https://youtu.be/nqXUwrEW7mc When I closed and reopened the tailgate, I started noticing issues. At first, when the battery was reconnected, the cargo light came on as expected, since the hatch was open. When I closed the hatch, the light stayed on, accompanied by a "Tail Gate Open" message regardless of tailgate position. I pulled the tailgate panel off and started poking around with my meter. I checked the wiring harness for chafing and broken wires. It's perfect. I tried to read a short on the tailgate switch. I could not. I was checking between the pink and brown wires on the tailgate lock motor. I now believe that was incorrect. I then tried shorting the pink and brown wires on the lock connector to fake the tailgate switch. That didn't work. I looked at the diagram again and shorted the pink wire to ground. No change. Sometime right around here, my third brake light, tailgate lock, rear wiper motor, and license plate lights stopped working. My rear defroster remains working. I now do not have power on either leg of the third brake light connector with the brakes activated. All the incandescent lights work fine. I have completely disconnected the trailer light adapter. Nothing has improved. I have checked every single fuse in the cargo area for continuity. They're all good. When the rear wiper is on, I can hear the relay clicking, but the wiper motor doesn't work. My info display also now shows "Check Stop Lamp." So that's where I'm at. With the trailer adapter disconnected entirely, the only electric item on my tailgate that works is the defroster. When I lock the car with the fob, my hazards don't flash. I suspect I fried something, but I'm not sure what. Any advice is appreciated.
Ihatespeedbumps
I suspect you might have a broken wiring harness at the tailgate hinge and you didn't notice until you started installing the trailer wiring. Pull the braided plastic sheathing back around the harness at the drivers' side hinge and see if you have any broken wires. Pretty common problem. Ihatespeedbumps
Remove the large power connector on the REM for about 1 minute and re-attach, this is going to re-boot the REM

Also, wouldn't that be the same as disconnecting the battery?
Ihatespeedbumps
Disconnecting the battery won't discharge the capacitors in the REM. It's a large square terminal with a 10mm bolt through the center.

I can hear the rear lock relay click with the key fob, and the rear wiper relay clicks. It's behaving like either a bad ground, but I can't find one. Ihatespeedbumps
I think at this point you are going to need to hook up VIDA and see if the REM is online and what codes have been stored.

Agreed. I've been meaning to buy VIDA anyway.
propav8r
Turns out it helps to have connector F on the REM plugged in. Thanks to my buddy Jordan's advice, we're back in business.
