2000 XC70 Running Issues with Codes, funny noises and all that!

My dad's car was acting funny - occasional wop wop and vibration through the shifter that would smooth out after running a bit ..after looking it over and it acting like nothing was wrong I took it home and just now finally got the demons to come out and show themselves, here are the symptoms:

ETS light on

Up Arrow light is Solid

CEL- codes P1631, P1633, P0121

Running rough, limp mode complete with stumbles, difficulty climbing hills from a start, WEAK brakes, etc.

NO RPM reading.

There was a whirring noise before I parked it and all this stuff started when I fired it up  to drive home.... any ideas?

Bird in the turbo?

Kidding aside, check and see if the intake hose is no longer attached to the throttle.  (or similar giant intake hose dislodged)  If this came on fast, I suspect something along these lines.

I checked all the hoses for something obvious ...  the problem seems to be somewhat intermittent but this was the first time I got to experience this and with codes...  something similar happened to my dad but without the ETS light coming on AFAIK and no codes stored, the yellow arrow was solid as he limped it back home up the hill, then when I went to look at it it was fine with no codes.  Thought he might be crazy describing the difficulty braking and everything...  So we  drove it a few more times without issues just the occasional funny whirring or rubbing noise which did not stop in neutral while rolling btw..   then all of the serious running probs described with the lights and codes occured as I re-started the car after parking it for dinner ...

from swedespeed feedback: basically ETS light could be MAF, ETM, brake pedal position sensor, anything thats connected with drive by wire. Up arrow is transmission related, make sure its not in winter mode. Potentially ABS module. P0121 is throttle unit fault.

To me iit seems like an electrical or ECU problem to causing all this to trigger at the same time ... yet the whirring I was hearing before everything kicked on was making me think mechanical prob, angle gear or maybe even trans related but no shifting probs observed... had to do the TC seal several years ago at only like 150k, that was unusual.. TC problem maybe? prob going to send this one to the shop to diagnose, too many different systems acting up for me to want to mess with it not being my car and since I am stuck in 98 with no dice unit yet..

Only simple suggestion I'd make is to remove the intake snorkel (fresh air to air box) when cold and reach down and unplug/replug the ETM.  These mostly fail in a slow fashion, I haven't seen one crash in quite the manner you describe.  No brakes means no vac. from the engine, make sure the ejector check valve isn't sealed shut or internally blocking where it can't draw a vacuum on the booster.  Could also just be the engine stopping and not producing vac..  Should have a few pumps of the brakes remaining before it gets hard to stop the car.

Doesn't sound like MAF / Throttle sensor, etc.....

yep... well the replug was no help, car went to dealer for a diagnostic, they werent even 100% what was going on but looks like ABS module is not communicating and MAY have shorted the ETS somehow (ha?) causing things to go haywire, and something about corrosion in the ECU and TCU sockets...   Its back here now cuz who wants to pay 4 grand to fix a 17y/o car?  LOL  ...  I am going to toss an ABS module in when I have a chance and go from there ...  I have an extra ETM or 2 kicking around if need be I guess..  pops is open to a partout if I deem it necessary...

oh yeah and supposedly the abs module caused both front calipers to seize?  eh??

How does  your B+ battery cable look?  Well connected?  Anything loose?

If you truly think there could be a problem with the ABS controller / module I would personally disconnect the battery cable while the car sits.  There is always power to the ABS (even key off) and I would consider it a fire hazard.  I once had a '98 that melted a wiring harness before I was able to get a battery cable off.  (again, key off)  If I were asleep in bed the car would have likely gone up in flames.

Maybe re-seat the main power fuses and relays.  If you have weird corrosion in the ECM box, no telling what has decided to let go.....
