V70 1999 interior leak and tailgate latch

Hi all,

after several years I am fed up and would like to solve few little issues here and there and hope you can help clarify the cause. Volvo V70 T5 1999.

1. leak in the cargo area - when the vehicle is parking tilted (back lower than front) and is raining or I am washing the vehicle, water collects on the cargo area cover on the right side(passenger, LHD vehicle). I managed to investigate is dripping right from the coat hanger. As I hate braking plastic trims I have never managed to investigate more. Vehicle has roof rails but I hope no engineer had attached them from the inside where it could start to leak thru. Vehicle has a sunroof - is there perhaps a drain pipe with any kind of connection that could have slipped loose over time. Or are they prone to failure? Any other ideas, pictures, DIY fixes proposals?

2. tailgate - since I bought the car it was rattling - first fix I have done were the notorious plastic clips that brake, but I was the one braking them when taking it apart. So this did not fix the issue. I tried to adjust the play which kinda helped. It was loose and rattling because that was the only way how to easily close the tailgate without slamming it. I have adjusted it so far that it did not rattle but you need to slam the tailgate so hard that people are looking at me as I would be a maniac. I did find few topics about the locker plate solving the issue - there has been few updated versions over the years, but I already have mounted the one that looks like the newest design. Are these notorious to fail as well and perhaps a new one could solve my problem? How do they even work, what is failing on these? Is just a metal plate as far I see...

Any help is appreciated

  1. You're going to have take off the plastic interior panels (carefully) and find where the water is entering.  I hear what you're saying about them being fragile, but there's no way around it.  There was a period of time when I drove my car w/o much of the interior panels for weeks because I was looking for something (squeaks probably..).
  2. Did you see this post?  I.e. is the plastic gone on your latch plate?

1. anyone has a diagram of how the plastic trim is attached so I pull in the correct places and so I know which way to pull? and perhaps a diagram of the sunroof drains?

2. Perfect! many thanks for this, did not come across that post, only seen that people buy a new plate but never understood why. I believe I do not have the plastic piece on there, need to check.

But if the plastic piece, which will always get damaged, is causing such problems this means it will need to be exchanged every few years without a "forever" fix possible. Might buy 10 pieces to get some discount :D
