bmdubya1198
I've been considering a manual swap for my 2000 R, but the problem right now is the cost. It would be much easier and cheaper for me to just swap in another AW55, especially considering I won't need to get a tune. I need to do too much more to this car right now, including a new ETM, to justify the cost. Now my question is the compatibility. Which other Volvos can I DIRECTLY swap this transmission from? I know early P2s are the same, but what years/engines will be a direct swap? I don't care about keeping the AWD, as the driveshaft has already been removed and I don't need the AWD. The reason I need a transmission is because the car won't engage any gear. The PO also mentioned he poured in some kind of slip-fix additive... to the top plug... which I was advised is NOT a fill plug. I figure it would be easier for me to just get a used transmission instead of fixing everything wrong with the current one.
(n)A-GAME
2000R is a unique transmission, and they're all on borrowed time as the failure rate is quite high. There aren't other auto transmissions that are compatible. So you can have a transmission shop rebuild it or just use this time to do the manual swap. They'll probably cost about the same at the end of the day.

I have two other cars fortunately (although only one is running and driving) so I don't need to be driving the R right away.
(n)A-GAME
That's really the smart play. I did an M66C swap in my Emerald 00R when its trans died (retained the AWD) and I love it. About to do another one with a buddy in his Laser 00R this summer.
bmdubya1198
Nice! I'm hoping I'll be able to source the parts for a good price fairly soon so I can get started on this project. I'd really like to get this car on the road.
Ihatespeedbumps
I'm going to second the M66 conversion, it's really the only option at this point in the cars life.
bmdubya1198
Glad I'm not nuts. My dad and one of my cousins were telling me it would be easier to just get a new automatic, but I know these transmission... well... suck. With me not knowing the history of this car's transmission, I'd rather not take the gamble fixing it. Then if I get a used one that's just as much of a risk. And I'm sure as hell not paying for somebody to rebuild the current trans. Now one question... the car probably needs an ETM anyway (ETS light is on, the idle constantly pulses, and the throttle is not steady at all when pressed), but will the current auto ETM work with the manual swap? I'm pretty sure it would be fine, but I've read about manual cars having different ETMs. Information on these throttles is very scattered.
Ihatespeedbumps
Throttle bodies are the same no matter what transmission is in it. The ETM swap info applies to turbo (Bosch) and non turbo (Denso) cars. You can swap in a throttle body from another turbo car 99-01 (S80, S60 and V70) to your 00R. If you put in a used trans it's going to fail too. They all had design flaws in 2000 that were fixed later in life. Plus, finding a used 2000 R transmission isn't the easiest thing in the world. Cool, I thought so. I'll keep an eye out for one at the junkyard.. I just saw a good trans come up on Facebook (a guy parting out a Venetian red R just like mine, actually), but it's in NY, and I'm certainly not driving that far to get one. I think the manual swap really is the best option here.
Commander Riker
I know where my old 00R transmission in Houston. It's with a friend. Worked great when I removed it a few years ago. Has sat since. Can inquire if you would like. Shipping might not be worth it, though.
bmdubya1198
Thanks, I actually just picked up a full M56 swap the other day. All I need is the clutch/pressure plate and the release bearing, then of course a tune. The swap will be underway soon!

I already had Hilton in mind, just from what I've heard about them over a certain 3-letter company.
