RN engine questions

I have an 06 xc90 2.5T with rodknock (prev owner ran low on oil) and I am looking at picking up a used 2.3T from an 01 C70. Iirc, the earlier RN's only had VVT on the exhaust cam. Can I use the 06 head on the 01 block, or will there be differences in oiling due to the lack of intake VVT solenoid?

Going to start out with stock 14T just to get it running, but would like to have the option for a bigger turbo later on, hence the 2.3L block.

Why not swap in a more readily available 2.5T and throw on a K24 with a tune?

Either route you go will require custom tuning.

Plus you get the better low end power from the 2.5. I second this idea. The 2.5 should be able to handle the K24 no problem.

Is 2.3 block, 2.5t head and stock 14T different enough from a stock 2.5t that is needs a custom tune? I was hoping I could start with that and get away with the stock ecu being able to compensate... Then once the vehicle is at stage 0 start upgrading things.

The 2.3T I found is an excellent price compared to any of the 2.5t's I have found so far. But, maybe I should hold out for a 2.5T like you guys are saying.

If you really want to go with the 2.3, you'll definitely need a custom tune. I think the lower compression of the 2.3 would make it REALLY sluggish with a stock tune. I'm sure a 2.3 on a 14t and stock boost would be a dog. I can't say for certain, but I'm pretty sure.

I don't see any mechanical reason, however, that you couldn't use the 2.5 head on the 2.3 block. I don't think the oil passages are any different on the block, all the differences are in the head, from what I've read.

You could always try a local pick and pull-type yard for a 2.5 block (or even a 2.3), too. That will be a cheap option. Just make sure the engine turns over before yanking it out.

Not that I need anything else in the garage, but I might still grab the 2.3 and save it for a spare for my 850... It's cheaper than the pick n' pull prices so it seems like a no brainer. But you have talked me out of putting it in the xc90. The idea of starting out with a custom tune when I haven't worked all the bugs out of the car yet seems like a headache.

One more question, are all 2.5t's dual vvt? There are a few for sale on ebay near me, but they are the typical salvage yard ad with no pictures and very little info other than the year, model and mileage of the car it came from. I can't believe how ridiculous some of the prices are... There's one with 200k that says "burns oil" in the description and they still want $800 (might just need pcv system, but still, $800 seems like a lot for a high mileage engine of questionable reliability)

Plus I think the crankshaft in those older 2.3L engines is something like 23lbs heavier than the later RN engines. Don't quote me on that, but I ran across that info somewhere (Dougy maybe?)

Yes, all 2.5T engines are dual VVT. Have you called Erie VoVo yet to see what prices they have?

Wow, that's a big weight difference if that's true!

Good call. From what I know, all 2.5s are dual VVT, yes.

Some of these engine sellers are insane. My cousin paid $1,200 for a 4.7 engine for his Durango with supposedly only 98k miles, but the damn thing knocked (solved by full timing chain job) and still burns oil like his old engine that spun a bearing. Fortunately they honored their warranty and paid over $1k to have the timing chain issue fixed!

Definitely give Erie a call if you haven't. They should probably have decent engines for reasonable prices.

I find 2.5T's at the pull a part yards around me all the time for a couple hundred bones. Don't forget to look in XC90's too!

They are really cheap, my Pull a Part only charges about $200 with the core for a 5 cylinder. They usually have a good amount of S60s/V70s with a 2.4T or 2.5T
