DRL or Fog lights

Just to give everybody an update. Late last Saturday, I was returning home from the Eastern Shore of MD through a number of dark roads. The fog light mod definitely made a noticeable driving improvement with the High Beams. I highly recommend this mod.

Doug,

As posted on swedespeed:

"OK. I've read, I swear. Can I get these damn DRL off or not? I can not stand them! This is a no brainer for me. I do not want them. Please make it stop!

In my c70 there was a screw head that you could turn to enable/disable DRL.

Even better than a full disable of DRL have them turn on when the High Beams are hit. Seems like a useful mod."

Glad I checked here. What a great mod. I'm definitely going to do this (as soon as I get the stones to start mucking about with this car).

I drive a lot on back country roads in NH, mostly narrow twisty dirt roads that have significant elevation changes. This area is also full of bear and moose which have a great tendancy to jump across the road in front of cars. Out of fear of not seeing a bear or moose and wanting to reduce the risk of hitting one, I installed a set of PIAA dichroic driving lights in the air dam of my XC70. They are separately switched, which is a pain, and I may change them to be switched with the highbeams, but they sure eliminate many of the dark spots on the road. Don't know if this would work for your R's or not.

I had the DLR disabled at the factory and at a service department and they still come on. So I took a thin piece of cardboard put black tape on it, and covered the light sensor. DLR's no longer light. It only will work if you don't have the automatic head lights that come on when the car is started and the light switch is set to any position but parking lights. Easy to remove and reinstall if you are worried about cosmetics.

Does anybody know if the '05 R headlight can be fitted into and '04 R. I like the design better. Maybe the light pattern is better. I can get my hands on some Euro lenses but if I can fit the '05 HL then I will spend the extra duckies there. :)

Sure they will fit, since the 05R headlights are identical to the 04R headlights!? No changes were made. The European Headlights will require wiring mods to work on a US, R model and are illegal in all States. In addition, you would, most likely, have to change back to stock before you could trade or sell your car. If you just do my Fog Light mod you would see a substantial improvement in lighting at a much lower cost.

Please help on replacing the fog bulbs. My manual shows the v70 only. Any diagrams on how the fog bulbs are removed?

Many thanks

First raise the front of the car using ramps or jack stands. You have to raise the front of the car up in order to access the fog lights. Twist off (counter-clockwise) the bulb holder and disconnect the extra ground wire on the H3 bulb. The holder was very tight on mine. Press in and lift up on the two metal retainer clips and remove the bulb. Do not get grease or fingerprints on the bulbs because it can cause premature failure. I used Latex gloves. Also, make sure you get the tabs on the base of the H3 bulb lined up properly on the fog bulb base holder. The extra ground wire on the H3 makes it harder to get everything lined up. On one, I did not get it seated properly the first time and got a very strange light pattern.

Doug,

Do you have Stongard type film over the brighter fog lights?  If so, any problems with the increased heat and cracking?

Thanks,

Rick

Yes, I have the heavy gauge StonGuard on the headlights and fogs with the SilverStar bulbs and no problems after 2 years and 21K miles.

Wow, all you have is 21K miles. I guess I need to stop taking so many trips to Germany. 43K miles < 2years. B)
