New to Volvos, and the R is my first. 36 years old. Needed something to accommodate a new addition to the family, but didn't want to give up my mischievous streak.

My other vehicles:

71 Saab V4 96

88 Mazda 323 GTX

98 BMW 650 (mc)

Ah, should have been more specific. An '05 V70R. Picked it up Thursday and got my first flat today.

Congratulations about the 05 and sorry about the flat. You know, you are allowed to tell us more about your R, like color combination, auto or manual, etc.

But I was reading about the differences between men and women on car boards and as far as I can tell, women don't talk specs

It's metallic grey, automatic (would have liked a manual but the best deal was for the one on the lot), with the cool metallic blue leather interior. Didn't go for the nav system or Atacama though we toyed with it for a while.

I traded in a 2000 Honda Insight, which I actually dearly miss. Hard getting used to such a big car and the mental hurdle of such low mpg. The heated seats are getting me through this tough time.

I am 33 and just picked up my new 2004 V70R automatic two weeks ago and already have 900 miles on it. It is red with the Gobi int. but no nav. and had been sitting on the dealers lot for a long time so it was a great deal. I wanted the 6 speed but could not find any used or left over 2004s. So far I love it, it's my third Volvo (99 S70 GLT and 2000 S70 GLT SE) and I had been scouting the v70r's for about 6 months (was searching about a 300 miles radius) and finally found this diamond in the rough. It's my company car and I drive about 30K a year and I am looking forward to every mile. The seat is a little tighter than the S70's but still one of the best in the world and I have averaged 22.3 MPG (mostly highway) through the first 2 tankfuls. This is a great forum and I look forward to being a part of the family. I'm already having to fight the wife over it when I'm home, somehow the family Suburban lost it's shine when this red rocket hit the driveway.

ChuckB... I think he was joking when he called you a show off... but maybe I read it wrong. I think they are great cars and I love to see any pictures of personal cars! I'm just a car nut, and can respect other marques just as much.

Call me crazy, but I really like the new 5-series (especially the new M5)... Or maybe the 510 bhp V10 and 7-speed SMGII is enough to make it look good!

Grossman... I have the Atacama interior and love it. I have Silver exterior, but I would reccomend Titanium Grey with the Atacama leather. I think this is the best color combination IMHO, especially since they've switched to the monochromatic trim.

Swedishchick... You should have gotten the optional "run flat tires"! Welcome to the forum.

  • 4 weeks later...

At 59 years of age, I seem to be at the upper end of the owner age survey. The V70R is our first Volvo. It's titanium grey, gobi, MT, premium, touring, climate, subwoofer, air quality.

Last fall, my wife and I decided it was time for a new car and considered many makes and models. I had several requirements: 1) I had to comfortably fit my 6'2" frame into it for long trips, 2) it had to be 4WD/AWD for driving to our second home at 8200 feet in the California Sierra Nevada, 3) it had to carry nearly as much stuff as our GMC Envoy, and 4) it had to make it up Sherwin grade north of Bishop,CA ( 3000 feet gained in about 15 miles) at 70 mph fully loaded without breathing hard. We ended up buying the R.

We ordered the car and then found out about OSD. To make a long story short, we liked saving money on the car but didn't want to go to Sweden. I convinced a couple of friends that they wanted to spend the three nights in Barcelona before signing for the car in Gotteberg. I saved about $5000 and they got a short free trip to Europe.

We now have over 700 miles on the R. We have generally kept it below 3000 rpm but are starting to see what higher engine speed feels like, I guess patience comes with old age. The main quibble I have with the car is the tires. So far this season, 558 inches of snow have been recorded at the ski area next to our Sierra Nevada home(I walk two blocks to a gondola). I need good M+S rated tires. I won't take the Rossos anywhere near the Sierras unless I am convinced the temperature will remain above freezing. I unsuccessfully tried to get the tires swapped before delivery and I don't want to deal with storing extra tires or wheels. The current plan is to keep the R to lower elevations during the winter until the Rossos wear out.

So far, we love the V70R.

I guess you can count me twice in the age poll. Last December I purchased a silver V70R GT (Nordkap) for my wife. Yesterday I traded my V70XC for a Titanium V70R GT (also Nordkap). I wanted a MT but the lease was higher (reportedly lower residual) so GT it is! I am 58 and the wife is "similar" age (not going to get myself in trouble here!)

Over the years I have learned that each car has its own personality. It is going to be interesting to see how the 2004 and 2005 differ.
