Slater
I suspect EVERY conical 15G turbine has these small hairline cracks just due to the way it is designed.Anyways, I've heard people on here say "if you have a crack at the wastegate it's junk", but how bad is bad? Here's a few pics:I bought this turbo with manifold on ebay for $75 and was planning on eventually having it rebuilt and a Super 60 wheel installed as a better alternative to a 16T.Is this thing total junk? What's the worse that will happen with a crack like this? Spiking? Lost boost? Inability for wg to control boost? It doesn't look THAT bad. I'm sure there are a lot worse out there... - Slater

Slater
take a shot with macro mode so we can actually see what hte crack looks like ←That is macro mode. The new camera I'm using sucks compared to my old one.The crack looks exactly like the yellow line, in thickenss, shape, and length. It's actually a little thinner than the yellow. Hairline cracks describes it perfectly - very thin like a hair. There are no "chunks" or other cracks branching off - just the single cracks.I will try and take a few more pics tonight. Maybe I can get a little closer.- Slater
JHEIII874T5M
that crack can only grow from here man. It's junk. Inability to hold boost at redline is what you will encounter

Inability to hold boost at redline is what you will encounter←So it a 16T the best option for a direct swap?Is it a plug and play swap, assuming I get a 16T flanged down pipe? I.e. will all of the oil and water lines hook right up, will the turbo be clocked correctly, and will the downpipe from a 96+ work?I am assuming I don't need an ecu change since the 16T basically flows almost the same as a 15G.What's the best place to get a 16T? Rebuilt is fine if there's significant cost savings...- Slater
beachnut
The 16T will work with a straight-flange 96+ down pipe, but not your conical one (which I'm sure you know). Try Volvo-Saab Parts for the turbo, talk to Chris. You should be able to get one from them for ~$350.
theunderlord
Slater, use some fault finder lay out on the turbo, so you can show everyone exactly how bad the cracks are... I think that will open peoples eyes about the cracking. Plus fault finder shows up really well in pictures.

He said for extra $ he can chop off the upper portion of a stock XC down pipe and send it to me along with the turbo. But it would be MUCH easier to just specify a 96 instead of 95 down pipe when I get my upgraded downpipe...Is Chris misinformed?- Slater
theunderlord
What's fault finder?←It's a two part system for finding faults in metal.. it's kinda like lay out blueing..First you spray this red dye on the metal, then you spray the developer over it.. the cracks become a dark red color, and you can see how big they really are.. ps- your package is on the way. beachnut
I talked to Chris last week ... the 16T he had was an angled flange, came off an '01 C70, won't work on a '96-'97 down pipe. You need a straight flange turbo. He's got to have one there somewhere. Make sure he sends you a pic of the turbo. That's how I realized his 16T wouldn't work for me. It's not that he's misinformed, he just needs a lot of *your* help to find the right part . Have him narrow down the search to only a '98 S/V/C 70.
