it would.

Hmmm, there must be some sort of difference because they are totally different Mitsubushi and Volvo part numbers!

I wonder if the wheel is different or maybe the wastegate actuator...I'll try and find out today...

Okay, number one: you need a straight flange downpipe to replace your conical flange downpipe. I think you know this already, but just reiterating.

Number two: Yes, a 16T with a straight flange will work for you, however, you will probably have a harder time finding one from a '96-'97 R since that turbo only came on Euro and Canadian R's with manual trannies. That's why I said to focus on a '98 S/V/C 70 HPT since the 16T straight flange was standard on those models that year here in the US. In '99 they became angled.

Ah, OK. Well, I would be ordering one from somwehere like turbochargers.com, so they just order it direct from MHI or wherever. If I was going the junkyard route, the '98 S/V/C 70 HPT would be the way to go like you pointed out.

Thanks!

I personally don't think the cracks are that big a deal.

15G's will get boost fade either way.

Every T3 turbo I've ever seen has multiple cracks around the wastegate flapper and I've never heard of any boost fade incidents with those turbos...

Go figure.

Then how come when you take the wastegate housing completely off it still fades at redline?

I was thinking of swapping Ben's (my old :() 16T's wastegate onto his old conical 15G that I now have...

i think boost fade is commonly confused with weaker wastegates accomodated with the fact that the 15G's cant push past 15 psi efficiently at redline. the only things cracks will get you is inconsistent boost patterns, if the cracks are big enough then yes you can exprience drastic losses in pressure but these are only hairline cracks, all of the higher mileage 15G's i've come across do exhibit these hairline cracks. moral of the story, eliminate possiblities, slater if i were you i'd go the 16T route, when i receive my down pipe from odell i'll give you a ride in a straight flanged 16T w/ 3" system to show you the benefits of going with a 16T.
