Wastegate Upgrades

I was checking out this guy's website:

http://hometown.aol.com/tlui99/turbo.html

And he says : "The 150/40 wastegate is not strong enough to hold the boost before the wastegate opens. Kai knows it all. He couldn't run more than 15.2psi of boost because the wastegate just couldn't hold the boost. The 300/70 wastegate from the '99 Euro V70R AWD is supposed to be able to hold more than 19psi of boost."

This is the first I've heard of the stock wasregate not being able to hold more than 15psu of boost. I doubt everyone on here who have 17 psi chips are losing boost becasue their wastegate can't hold it.

Is this true or is it a waste of $$? Are the 300/70 wastegates easy to source in the states, or are they any alternatives?

THATS MY CAR :D

Sweet. I sent you an email but it bounced. I guess the site was outdated or something.

So why do you HAVE to have the stronger wastegate, when 95% of the people with chips don't get one and they hold boost just fine?

Also, I called turbochargers.com and they said that they could probably get a 16T WITH the 300/70 WG already on it as long as I give them the part # from the turbo. If I can find the part number, that would rock!

Any idea, since you already got the wastegate from one? They said it would be a "49-something".

If you install a MBC its a mute point

what do you mean by "mute point"

also how much does turbochargers.com want for a 16t with the upgraded wastegate?

does the 16t come with the same wastegate as the 15g or is it the wastegate between the the 15g and the 300/70 (forgot the number it has)?

I have no clue as to the price without giving them a part number. But for the standard 16T they want $795 for a brand new unit. I would imagine the price fopr the one with the better wg will be very close if not the same, as most of the mitsu turbos around that A/R size all seem to be the same magical $800 price. The only difference is at the Mitsu turbo factory they slap this wg and ID plate on or that wg and ID plate on.

I am assuming ALL of the "normal" Volvo wastegates come with the weaker 150/40 wg, except for the Euro spec V70R which comes with the stronger 300/70. But I'm just speculating at this point. I figure if I can get a hold of the part number from the Euro V70R, I can order that turbo and basically get the freebie better wg!

I wasn't planning on it since an ECU upgrade would negate the need for MBC. Plus MBCs allow too quickly of a spoolup, which is one of the reasons I an getting a BSR chip in the first place (torque limiting in 1st gear/low rpms to save tranny/rods).

Right?

Ok, turning off auto spell check..... was moot. And for whatever reason its not in this dictionary. I run a custom ECU and I still use a MBC for just the reasons you have listed. Torqe limited in first does not save anything excapt tires. Engine does not know if the tranny is in 1st or 3rd

i hooked my mbc back up the other day. the spool up is much quicker. i'm still playing with it to find the right setting. i have a big problem with the tires spinning at higher rpm's in first gear.

So what psi do you have your MBC set at? Are you saying that if your chip is a 16psi chip that you also have your MBC set to 16psi because you are not using it for boost control but rather for faster spoolup. I mean, you would be using it for boost control per se, but do you mean you're not using it to run higher boost because the ECU is doing that?

Correct. ECU will do 22 psi and hold or 24ish spikes.... No thanks. I have the MBC set for 18psi

If I'm not mistaken I believe that most usdm 16T's had a 216/60 wastegate. I have seen them with 300/70 wg but those may have only been available overseas.

OK, Swedish Mike got back to me and gave me the scoop.

The 300/70 wg is on 19Ts (i.e. The Euro 99-00 blue V70R AWD has 19T and 265 hp).

So you will not be able to get a 16T with the 300/70 wg direct from Mitsu. You would have to find just the 300/70 wg from a 19T and just swap it onto the 16T like the buy in the How2 did.

I think I'm just going to stick with a plain jane 16T and roll with it. I doubt I'm going to have wastegate problems with just a chip...
