Anyone Tried Polishing The Peeling Roof Trim?

This is to those that have the peeling roof trim. Instead of replacing it, painting it, or swapping it out for the Euro rails, has anyone considered polishing it? The metal under there is aluminum and would look nice polished I bet. It shouldn't even need to be wet sanded, as it's already baby smooth under the rubber. Just mask off the paint and use a buffing wheel with rouge or something to polish it right up. I'll bet it would look nice, and would accent the chrome on the grille...

Greg, Miles (pullmyfinger) has a black wagon with the same dillema you have.. his is all peely, but he hasn't gone for the gusto and polished it.

Well, I was just going to pull it off and use black speed tape or paint it black, but thought this may be a cool alternative. Of course you would have to work to keep it polished since bare aluminum will oxidize...

sadly enough, i've heard guys (on this site) cop to using electrical tape to cover it up...

you could shoot it with some clearcoat... mask everything off well, that should help with the oxidizing..

See if I was going to do all that it would probably be easiest to just pull it off. Then it would be easier to strip, buff, clear, etc.

Those chrome roof rails do look really nice. Are the Volvo Euro rails aluminum, or plastic or what?

It would be some serious jack to buy new Euro rails, and have them stripped and chromed.

mine was peeling, but i pulled it off and painted it when i painted the rest of my roof. theyre REALLY easy to pull off. The only part I think would look bad is the front, where it lines the windshield.

Any tips? How do you pull them off? I have seen some instructions on the Net but they were kind of vague. Basially said you "pull off" the ends and then the strips are held on by clips, but that really doesn't help much.

that's basically it. it's hard to get more detailed. pull off the end-cap at the rear window. you can look down the channel, to kind of see how the snaps are. they really are just snaps. use a screw-driver wrapped in cloth, and just slide it along the rail until you feel where the snap is. then just slowly move the rail up. it will snap out. very easy...
