JehovArob
Wow, that is expensive. Also, seems to be darker than I'd like. Ah well. Maybe I'll just keep it the way it is (unless there is a cheaper option). After looking at their website, it doesn't really sound like you are getting just the insert to change the color. Sounds like you're getting new dials and everything. Is this right?
Serge
I was thinking of changing the lights in my S80 to red (like an Audi).Although the instrument cluster bulbs would be easy, the door switches and ECC bulbs would be a huge pain. Much more trouble than it's worth.I think LED bulbs are not much use in most car applications. I purchased some LED cylinder bulbs with 4 leds in each one. They're kind of cool looking, but they're not very bright and they don't work well with the auto-dimmer. I also got some LED brake light bulbs, and they're crap too. A normal incandescent bulb shines light all around, back into the reflector, and creates a nice even appearance within the housing. An LED does not, and it's just a super-bright pinpoint of light in the center of the reflector.LEDs also wouldn't work well in dash lighting because they are too 'directional' to work properly with the diffusers, light pipes, and prisms that are in those housings.I'd save your money.Hence you can use LEDs with diffused lenses instead of clear lenses. DiMSuMbOi
I did my climate control and radio w/ a blue sharpie...The climate control came out alright but still some spots are lighter than others. The radio barely has any light coming out now but the spots that do are nice and blue. I think I coloured too much clear stuff blue.Wondering if I should do it over in red but I dont think going over the blue with red will be a good idea... i think it may come out black or something??? JehovArob
So, you're saying blue does work well? I'd really like to cheaply, and effectively, make mine blue. Would be so cool.
JehovArob
Got a great idea of how to go about doing this:Soak the bulbs you want to change the color of in the stuff you can get at craft stores to do stained glass stuff with. Now, I just have to figure out how to replace the bulbs in the switches that are soldered in place. Any tips?
Figawi
hmm, that's a good idea starman
JehovArob
I declare the test bulb a raving success. Now, just gotta do the rest. But, few questions:Before I open the dash again, what kinda bulb does the clock/thermometer need? Same as the ones that light the spedometer and such or same as the little ones that light the warning lights? When the lights which are in the switches (such as the one for the sunroof, defrosters, etc.) burn out, how do you go about replacing them? They seem to be soldered in place. Are you supposed to just replace the entire unit?Um, I guess that's it.Oh, that's right. What kinda lights do i need for the climate controls? Also, what are the lights like under the shifter? Do they replace easily too?
maiku
for the shifter, you gotta rip the whole thing out of the consoletakes tons of workmaybe when i got the timethere is a guide on volvospeed somewhere
550
actually pulling the console up off the floor wasn't too bad, i did it less than 20 minutes (for cleaning)Edit: http://volvospeed.com/Repair/SV70console.htm
Figawi
i get all of my lights at the dealership. if you have a 93 or early 94 then the switches have to be replaced if the bulbs go out
