Wow. $35 to replace each switch. I think I'll experiment first knowing that if I do screw up, I can buy a replacement (which I hope not to).

Painting bulbs did work pretty for dash and climate controls, but the paint was rather thick, so I tried to paint it on. Ended up getting some thicker areas so the lighting is uneven. I guess now I've gotta go back and get some of the thinner they sold and try dipping the lights in to get a nice, even coat. We'll see...

starman,

i would post a want ad on the board for newer style switches for your 850. there is no point replacing your switches with the 93 style when you can upgrade to the newer style and then just replace the bulbs when they go out.

the light for the shifter does plug (even on the 93's)

That's a good idea. The newer switches are compatable with the older cars, though? Same plugs and all? Maybe that is what they'd be selling me at teh volvo dealer, and they just didn't mention it? Or do they actually give you the older ones? Also, not sure if I'd like the stylings of the newer ones. Hopefully my soldering skills will be decent enough that I'll be able to just replace the bulbs.

for those of you who have the trip computer in your cars, does your dash switch have a changeable bulb? i don't think mine does and it is the newer style switch. this poses a problem since i can't paint that bulb without taking the switch apart

Your car has a trip computer? That's awsome.

Also, having great luck with painting bulbs. Have replaced the ones in the climate control unit, and it looks awsome. Now, just have to wait for another sunny day so I can do the instrument cluster. I found a great way to paint the bulbs:

Get some glass-paint at craft store (I got some water-based paint, so I was able to water it down to the desired translucence).

Dip the bulb in the paint and dab off any excess on the dipping container.

Keep the bulb upsided-down and start to dry with a hair dryer. Then, dab off any extra paint on a paper towel and finish drying with the hair-dryer.

Got me very nice, even coats on my lights (which was a problem as when I'd put them down to dry, the paint would gather on one side and cause uneven distribution of light. Also, overall coats were too thick.

Yes, has anyone broken into those controls? I'd like to make them blue, too. Although, if I can't I guess it won't be so bad.

BTW, blue instrument panel looks really nice. If I had some way of hosting pictures, I'd post the before (which has 2 burnt out bulbs) and the after pictures.

I broke into the windows control a few nights ago, I had an old one laying around that I replaced.

Its not pretty in there, I didnt even get one of the switches open before ball bearings and other pieces came loose and rattled. But I did pry it up enough to see the bulb, Its very small, and green.

I wouldnt suggest going in there to change the color on a good switch, from the back anyway.. I dont know if there is a way to get in from the button side of the switch. I think that is the only hope for changing the color of those bulbs
