BEST Oil for V70R

I'm about to put in my order for my 7500 mile service - is $5.70 a quart a good price for this stuff? and I need 6 quarts for a change, right?

The dealer will do it for free with their blend... but after all I've read here, the $40 seems like a sound investment...

That is not bad, but if you go to WalMart, you can get Mobil One for $3.98 a quart. I hate to admit I have shopped at WalMart, but, it is hard to deny the savings. (the cheap deal is on the 5 quart bottles)

I wouldn't.

Go with 10w30, 5w30 or 10wx40

"0" oil is not really recommended for these motors

Huh. I will check with the dealer again, but I thought that was what he recommended...

Thanks.

There are sp many theories and opinions about oil, all you will get is a dozen answers.

Like a holes, everyone has one and has an opinion.

I would double check with the dealer what is and what is not recommended and go with whatever you like/ I don't think any high end oil will be bad so go with your preferences but DO check on that "0" weight.

I had a conversation about this with my (very good) service manager and he went on how it was designed for emmisions more than anything else.

There were a few cars with factory fill 0 weight oil a few years ago (early 21 century) but they seemed to have backed off that and gone back to good old 10w30

You might check out page 159 in the manual. Some recommend 5W-30 as easier circulation on start up. Synthetic resists cooking on turbo parts after shut down, degrades less than non synthetic. Mobil 1 is very popular, 5.8 qts. for an R, let the ambient temperature conditions in your area be your guide.

Volvo specifically lists 0W30, 0W40, 5W30 and 5W40 as acceptable oil viscosities to use. The interesting thing is that 2007+ models the recommendation in the manul for operation in climates over 86 degrees they now recommend 0W30 or 0W40 whereas 2006 and before it said 10W30.

Here's Volvo's 2007 Oil Chart

Here is my stinky opinion :D

You service advisor seems to be misinformed.

The "low" number, in this case 0 refers to the viscosity at a certain temperature. Although many 0 weights flow better than 5 weights at extreme low temps (-25 ish), the 0 weights they can be thicker than these same 5 weights at temps warmer than this (-25 to -5). The vicosity/temp curve is not linear. If you don't experience extreme cold weather you may be better served with a 5 weight.

Now the "high" number.

This is not effected by the low number at all. An example would be the famous German Castrol 0W-30. Even though this is a "0" weight on the low end it is also one of the thickest 30 weights available. Thicker than most 10w-30's. Almost a 40 weight.

My 1 1/2 cents.

Go figure. I found the same chart in my 2007 manual (page 190). The service manager said 10W-30. That isn't even listed. Reading the chart and the associated text, given I frequently experience temperatures in the 90 - 110 F range, and will be towing, and in 'mountainous areas' every time I go skiing, it seems the common denominator is 0W-40.

Coscto has 6 quarts of Mobil 1 for $30. I'll check Walmart tonight.

Interestingly enough, my manual also recommends Castrol.

Thanks for the various comments...

The most interesting part of that is that Castrol don't even seem to MAKE 0W-40.

They don't in North America for sure. They may in Europe. They do import a German made 0w-30 synthetic that is more like a 0W-39. :D Hard to find in the States though. I think only the odd Autozone may carry it.

An AutoZone near me used to carry it . . . now they have something that is advertised as the same formula but manufactured in the USA.

I cleared out my local stores shelves (30L) when they said they would sell the German Castrol 0w-30 under the regular Syntec sale price of $5.79. I am good for awhile. :D
