I'd take a look at the 2007 owners manual, which a response to the whole engine sludge debacle. Volvo is now recommending different oil weights in the same engine with a particular focus on 5W30 and 5W40. If you are in an area that gets over 86 degrees, go for the 5W-40/0W-30.

I was going to go for 5W40 but now I am having second thoughts...

I'm waiting on a call back from my service manager on this very topic...

Surprisingly, 5W-30 came back as the recommendation from the field service manager - and yes, it did change in 2007.

Now I'm even more confused.

Don't be confused just bring either Mobil One 0W-40 or Castrol 0W-30 to the dealer for your oil change and be done with it. Only give them 5.5L so they don't grossly overfill.

5W30 is a good all-around oil, but in S. CA, I would use a 5W40 if you can find it for the better high temp performance, or a 0W40 or 0W30 since 5W40 is hard to find. Happy hunting

Turns out that voicemail was a mistake. 5W-40 was supposed to be the recommendation. I'll be checking walmart at the weekend to see what I can find. I already know they don't carry the 0W-40 that I had previously set my heart on.

OK so 5W40 it is! It is incredible that picking the correct oil has turned into brain surgery, but hey, got to keep the R happy!

I am using Mobil 1 Delvac 5W-40. It is a heavy duty oil designed for deisel & gas engines. It also has the highest API ratings for gasoline engines. It can be difficult to find, so try a local truck stop first. If you can't find it there then buy some Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5W-40, as it is the same stuff. It is fairly expensive (about $2-3) more than regular Mobil 1. Make sure whatever you buy has the "1" in the name as that is the synthetic designation. Wehereas Mobil Delvac is not synth.

If you can't find that try using Shell Rotella Synth 5W-40, it is a group III synth with the same ratings.

I believe that Walmart carries Mobil 1 Tuck and SUV, and it too was insanely cheap.

In case anyone is still following this thread, the Turbo Diesel Truck Mobil 1 5W-40 was $22.48 for 4 quarts in my local Wal-Mart. No sign of Mobil 1 0W-40, which I eventually sourced from Pep Boys. I got the 6 quart case for $36 there. I figure by joining the Mobil 1 club I'll at least get $5 back - which makes it as cheap (if not cheaper) as buying it on-line. (cheapest I found it on-line was $5.70 a quart, exc. delivery).

JRL is correct, Synthetic oils do not "cause" leaks per se, they cam under the right conditions cause the removal of buildup from conventional oils that "hid" leaks. Depending on your point of view it is uncovering something that would eventually rear its head anyway. I would say switching to a synthetic from a conventional oil would be fine in a car with more than 30,000 miles depending on the age, and condition of the engine. Time and wear effect seals both, so a 10 year old car with 30,000 miles will have more deteriorated seals than a car with one year and 30,00 miles on the clock.

So Alex (et al) , I was thinking about experimenting with synthetic for my 04 V70R GT at my 56,250 mi oil change. My thinking is that if leaks develop I could return to conventional oil at the 60K service. I have been pretty religious with oil changes at 3750-mi intervals from the time the R was new, and I do not push the car particularly hard, especially when the motor is not yet warmed up.

There are a couple reasons I'm interested in synthetic:

- Possible improved gas mileage

- Longer life and freer "spin" for the turbo bearing

I see there are some red flags on the site about this, so I htought I'd get the collective wisdom of the Rers.

I would seriously doubt you would have a leak at 56K in an 04 R. The seals used in the more modern engines are really much better than they used to be. If you do have a leak however, you really have to ask yourself, is using an oil that leaves depositis and gums things up really the way I want to solve the leak?
