wmontgomery
I would seriously doubt you would have a leak at 56K in an 04 R. The seals used in the more modern engines are really much better than they used to be. If you do have a leak however, you really have to ask yourself, is using an oil that leaves depositis and gums things up really the way I want to solve the leak?Alex - I think you're telling me, "yes, go ahead and do the experiment"....right? I'd like to see if my mileage might go up an mpg or tow, and if the turbo spins a little more freely.thanksbillaka "a little dense at times"

AlexD
If you leak with Synth, its not the synth oil that it is the problem, it is the leak that is the problem.Of course. The lack of sludge and the "cleaning" nature of synth will just uncover the evils that already existed. So, back to the question: Yes, go for the synth. You probably won't get noticeably better spool or anything, but it will be better for your engine in the long run. If you do have a leak, don't switch back, fix the leak. It's just like radiators, if you have a leak, replace the leaky part, don't use Stop Leak or the like, they just cause more problems in the long run than they are worth. wmontgomery
AD et al - Done. Good advice re: leaks if they occur...but my svc mgr, like you, thought leaks unlikely. Will monitor.Q: Can I go 7500 mi between oil & filter changes on synthetic and keep the motor well-protected? I had been changing @3750-mi intervals on dino oil.bill

I think I am like a lot of guys on the forum and still pull the synth at 3k-3750k mark. I switched my 00'R over to synth ( well, not really- it's history showed swaps of synth for conventonal oil for 50k or so) fully at 156K and developed spark plug well leaks. I also saw much residue in my first couple of oil changes.
Pedestrian A
Don't expect any significant difference from synthetic oil. The reason to switch is just to play safe with the engine and turbo. Personally, I don't see any different in mileage. What I can tell from synthetic and dino oil is the oil remains in golden color after driving 6000 km/3750 miles but the dino oil already turns into brown color after driving 2000 km/1250 miles.
