Thanks again fellas

I'm going to get the head tested and reassembled first up,if thats cactus I may aswell look around for a T5 engine as the chances of finding another R at the wreckers in Australia is fairly slim ,does the T5 and the R engine share the same compression ratio ?

I will then send the 18T off for a once over and reassembly.

Next step I guess is to start ordering all of the necessary gaskets, head bolts, exhaust studs and nuts, water pump, cam belt, serpentine belt, idlers and tensioners from IPD.

Pics to follow soon !

Any turbo motor from 94-98 will be the same motor - the T5 and R the GLT will be a LPT but will work just as well .

Hmmm If things get desparate I thought about going for the 2.4T badged here in Aus (LPT), but I wasn't sure if manifolds , gearboxes and engine mounts would bolt up to the block.

All the same .

Figure the 2.3 the 2.4 and the 2.5 are all the exact same motor minus displacement , rods and pistions but will bolt up to any m56 , m66 , m59 , m58 and the autotragicrap .

That threaded rod that your not sure of looks to be the wastegate actuator rod.

No it's not. It's a bracket that bolts to the valve cover (2 holes/bolts to the valve cover) and the top engine mount. The threaded end goes through a hole on the top engine mount bracket. Look at the closeup of the top engine mount bracket. There is a large hole, then a smaller hole underneath. The threaded part goes in that hole.

no prob and it looks like a bad headgasket for as white as some of those exhuast valves are ...

Hi there

What would cause a bad head gasket on an unmodified car like this ? do they have any inheritant faults or could it just be lack of servicing of cooling system ect ?

Just wanted to know as I would like to address any known issues with the rebuild.

PS Chilled Man whats your name ?

Regards Darrin (but my friends just call me Daz !)

Great Find! Hope your able to get it up and running again!

Thanks matey

Probably the only real problem here in Australia is finding parts,I would expect there would only be a hundred of these imported originally...?

I have found a 2.4T in Melbourne but that car is 900 klms away ! So I will just have to play the waiting game and just see what comes up.

Thermostat, Broken Coolant hose , ETC sensor , crack in rad , broken coolant tank

those would be the inherent coolant system faults wich I have seen in a few cars already

oh and its justin

Ok cool as Justin

Just as long as there are no head to block issues....I'm opting for the 04 R head gasket too, looks to be the one to use.

PS Happy New Year everyone
